Introduction
Learn to support athletes’ competitive performance, recovery, and overall health by providing them with specialist and evidence-based nutritional advice.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Study an academically challenging and vocationally relevant programme, underpinned by evidence-based practice

This course aims to meet the professional standards set by leading industry organisations. It was the first to be accredited by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR), the national register for qualified sport and exercise nutritionists. Upon completion of MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition, you’ll be able to apply for graduate registration with the SENR.

Curriculum
Teaching & Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Core modules
What you'll learn
Physiology & Biochemistry for Performance (20 credits)
You will develop a critical understanding of the metabolic and endocrine responses to different types of exercise, their time course and the scope for training and detraining adaptations. It will also facilitate the development of laboratory data collection skills.
Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
You will introduced to the general principles, concepts and underpinning theory in nutrition and biochemistry necessary for the development of performance nutrition strategies.
Research Process (20 credits)
You'll be introduced to different styles and approaches to designing research and analysis. And you'll learn to take a more critical approach to theory and evidence, providing the basis for your own master’s level research.
Measurement & Evaluation in Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
You will gain knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of measurement and evaluation tools and techniques in sport and exercise nutrition. This module will also enable you to develop a personal CPD plan and critically reflect on the process of measurement and evaluation in sport and exercise nutrition.
Ergogenic Practices & Nutritional Manipulation in Sport & Exercise (20 credits)
On completion, you will be able to use contemporary research to explore the complex interactions and relationships between dietary manipulation strategies and specific ergogenic aids/food supplements on metabolism, sports performance and health.
Professional Practice (course aligned) (20 credits)
This module will equip you with an understanding of the skills and experience necessary to operate as a sport and exercise scientist in a range of professional settings.
Major Independent Study (60 credits)
Engage in the negotiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of a major independent study relevant to your interests and course.
Program Outcome
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and utilise the distinctive insights and limitations of the nutrition discipline relevant to exercise and sport.
- Analyse and critically evaluate pertinent research evidence.
- Take a reflective approach and apply established principles and methodologies to diverse problems and issues relevant to sport and exercise nutrition.
- To consider and critically reflect upon both traditional and contemporary approaches to research, theory and practice relevant to sport and exercise nutrition.
- Synthesise theoretical debates and complex issues and apply them to professional practices and vocational contexts.
- Deal with complex issues relevant to the area of sport and exercise nutrition both systematically and creatively, make sound judgments and competently communicate and present their conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Adopt a reflective approach to the understanding of key methodological and pedagogic debates in research relevant to sport and exercise nutrition.
- Understand how research methods and techniques generate different kinds of knowledge and be able to apply and use appropriate research skills relevant to the study of sport and exercise nutrition.
