Introduction
Interest in sport and exercise in the UK has increased significantly, and those working in the industry require diverse skills. This course will enable you to apply science and medicine to help athletes recover from injury, reach their physical peak and also aid the general population in maintaining healthy lifestyles.
You will gain practical expertise that will allow you to assess, treat and support individuals from a variety of sporting disciplines. By understanding the process of an injury audit to identify risk factors, you will learn how to implement an evidence-based treatment plan that minimises the chance of re-injury.
You will develop a comprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology, biomechanics and sports-specific clinical reasoning, allowing you to accurately evaluate and treat injuries. You will study rehabilitation strategies and return-to-play assessments, and you will explore the emergent field of prehabilitation, which aims to prevent injuries before they occur.
As a student in this course, you will join a research-led academic community in the subject area of therapeutic and rehabilitation sciences.
You'll gain practical skills that you can apply straight away, whether you work or volunteer in sports, or are looking for your first job in the field. Ourย Sports Volunteer Programmeย has excellent links with professional sporting clubs and fitness initiatives, and you'll have the chance to maximise your learning by taking up additional experience opportunities offered through this.
You'll be taught by staff who are practising sports and exercise therapists with a huge amount of expertise and professional links.

Curriculum
Teaching & Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. Youโll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Core Modules
What you'll learn
Epidemiology & Sports Trauma Management
This module will incorporate your training and assessment in current sports trauma management techniques utilised by health professionals.
Neuromuscular Biomechanics
Explore specific aspects of the structure and function of the neuromuscular system and their relationship with intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The module provides you with an understanding of the mechanical basis of joint and muscle function, as well as developing an understanding of the relationship between external and internal loading factors which can lead to injury.
Evidence-Based Practice in Sports Physiology
Consider the evidence basis for advanced exercise testing and prescription methods. You will discuss contemporary technological advancements and their application to sports physiology of enhancing elite performance.
Sports Injury Management & Rehabilitation
Incorporate a theoretical and practical approach which will develop your comprehensive understanding of injury management. You will explore key underpinning knowledge, skills and evidence for rehabilitation strategies for athletic populations. You will also critically review treatment strategies for conservative and surgical options inclusive of specific controlled conditions.
Clinical Decision-Making in Sport
Develop your clinical reasoning skills in the assessment of sports injuries, complex clinical presentations and pathophysiology. Under the module, you will also enhance your skills in critical thinking, analysis and reflection. The understanding and application of current models of clinical reasoning allow you to develop your present and future practice.
Clinical Exercise Testing
Gain a detailed and critical understanding of the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise prescription in populations with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. You will focus on the use of interpretative algorithms for the cardiopulmonary test data. You will also engage in a fairly intensive introduction to electrocardiography as well as survival statistics as they are used in clinical exercise physiology research.
Research in Professional Practice
Develop your understanding of research with a focus on the systematic review process. You'll undertake an independent research project, facilitated by workshops delivered by your staff teaching team and assigned supervisor. Your achievement will be assessed through the submission of a written report and supplementary files in the style of a journal article.
Program Outcome
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Critically apply principles of epidemiology, exercise, clinical reasoning, and sports science to the practice of sports and exercise medicine.
- Synthesise and critically discuss evidence from a variety of sources and adopt a research-informed approach to practice in sports and exercise medicine.
- Evaluate and integrate existing and new knowledge into their current practice.
- Critically evaluate existing knowledge and use effective strategies to conduct research relevant to the field of sports and exercise medicine.
