- Explore how departments across a business are affected by health and safety procedures and processes.
- Enhance your understanding of the technical and human aspects of health and safety and the causes of problems, whether machine malfunctions or human misjudgements.
Alternative study routes
You could study this course or PG Dip Health & Safety to achieve an accredited Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) award. If you have already completed an IOSH-accredited postgraduate diploma, you could convert your qualification into a master’s degree by studying two additional research modules part-time over one year.

Teaching & Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Ergonomics
Examine how the working relationship between operator, machine, and environment can be adapted for efficiency and safety, understanding the design features and environmental stressors that can occur.
Health & Safety Practice
Study the requirements that are placed upon organisations to ensure legal compliance to enable the management of health and safety risks, and critically relate good practice to the legal requirements so that compliance can be achieved.
Quantitative Risk Analysis
Critically examine the concept of risk as the product of probability and consequences. Develop knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the analytical techniques and the data requirements for quantification.
Applied Research Methods
Gain the theoretical foundation and practical skills required to complete small-scale research or a practice development project. Learn how to write a research proposal, conduct research, and analyse relevant data.
Professional Practice & Development
Learn how to apply your knowledge and skills to other work settings or environments.
Occupational Health & Wellbeing
Focus on the health aspects that may occur if good workplaces and practices are not developed, looking at both physical and mental health and concepts of wellbeing.
Sensible Risk Management
Develop the knowledge of the common types of hazards, and the risk assessment process and skills in the completion of different types of risk assessment for the identified hazards.
