Introduction
If English is not your first language, this international foundation year will give you the necessary academic English skills to study for an undergraduate degree in UK higher education.
As part of your course, you’ll:

Alternatively, if you are based in the UK and are eligible for a student loan you could choose one of the following honours degrees:

We’ll help you improve your subject knowledge, and academic and study skills through projects, essays and practical exercises. You’ll be assessed by a mixture of coursework and classroom tests.
Degree preparation
This course will improve your communication and presentation skills, time management, problem-solving, and organisation and planning skills. You’ll also have the confidence to show greater initiative in your studies. All of these skills will prepare you for your next programme of study and the workplace when you graduate.
Class study
There will be a minimum of 15 hours of classroom-based, daytime study per week across both semesters. This is in addition to a recommended 15 hours of self-study per week.
Your timetable will be provided at induction. Classes could be timetabled any time between 09:00-18:00 Monday to Friday. There will be no classes on national holidays.
Class size
Your class will have a maximum of 25 students apart from lectures and some subject module classes.

You’ll be given access to online self-study resources and matched with an academic advisor who will offer you guidance throughout the course.

Curriculum
Teaching & Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Year 1
What you'll learn
English Skills 1
Develop academic English language competence in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to prepare for undergraduate study.
Global Issues & Research
Fundamentals of Mathematics
Develop the appropriate mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding to progress onto a wide range of undergraduate courses. You will focus on real-world problem solving and understand the language and methods of maths used in a UK Higher Education setting.
English Skills 2
Enhance the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking with a focus on research for an independent study related to your degree subject choice. You will learn to read critically and summarise, paraphrase, synthesise and reference when writing texts for academic purposes.
Option modules may include
Introduction to Art, Architecture & Design Practice
Develop awareness of basic art and design practices about the subject areas of art, architecture and design; enabling you to explore elements of each of the above subject groupings as well as identifying and learning key terminology pertinent to the fields of art, architecture and design. This option is not available if you start the course in January.
Introduction to Business
Develop awareness and understanding of the principles of Business and Management and the role of the Business Environment; identifying key vocabulary and terminology and enabling you to explore the diversity of business. This option is not available if you start the course in January.

Program Outcome
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Communicate clearly in the English language in a range of situations for social and academic purposes to an appropriate level (minimum CEFR B2) for entry to undergraduate study.
- Develop a range of appropriate study and academic skills within the context of British Higher Education and manage learning through guided development.
- Develop numerical abilities to provide a strong foundation for further academic study within the context of British Higher Education and future professional lives.
- Carry out study in English related to their subject area and begin to develop the ability to present access and analyse information independently and make reasoned judgements using lines of argument.
- Develop creative use of digital technologies to enhance academic, personal, and professional skills.
- Work collaboratively in cross-cultural situations and develop intercultural awareness, understanding and competence.
