Key Summary
About: Leeds Beckett University’s BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering teaches design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure while protecting the environment. You’ll study structural, water, geotechnical and highways engineering, do lab and IT software practicals, and record professional development. The course is accredited for IEng (Full) and offers summer placements and a sandwich year.
Career Outcomes: You’ll gain skills in surveying, project work, CAD and site practice leading to roles in design, construction, project management, highway engineering, structural engineering, water/wastewater engineering and geotechnical engineering. Graduates can also progress to MSc Civil Engineering or professional membership with ICE and Joint Board of Moderators.
What is civil engineering?
Civil engineering is behind how our modern towns and cities work. Civil engineers design, construct, maintain, upgrade, rehabilitate and repair major infrastructures used by humans while protecting the natural environment.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Qualify as a Science Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subject so you’re ready to go straight into the profession as a graduate civil engineer
- Study a technical course that will ensure you have the practical skills to contribute effectively in a wide range of environments in industry.
- Learn from a teaching team with industry expertise in a broad range of subjects including structural engineering, water engineering, geotechnical engineering and highways engineering.
- Take part in practical work and laboratory study using industry-standard IT software.
- Be supported in recording your initial professional development for membership in the accrediting institutions, find out more in the accreditation section below.
- Secure work placements during the summer and plan an optional paid placement year in the industry with the help of your course team
Accredited IEng (Full)
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Visit the JBM website for further information.
Hands-on experience
The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, if you choose to take one. A placement or sandwich year will provide you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace, which will help you stand out when applying for jobs after you graduate.
Professional guidance
Personal development sessions will help you broaden your industry knowledge. The sessions are generally provided by leading industry professionals and will help you choose the area of civil engineering to enter upon graduation. We also have close links with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Industry guidance
The accrediting body Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was formed more than 200 years ago and is one of the world’s most respected professional engineering associations. Visit the ICE website to find out more about the exciting opportunities a career in civil engineering could bring. You can also discover what civil engineering is and why you should become an engineer.

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mathematics, science, and engineering principles across a range of civil engineering subjects, notably structural engineering, geotechnical and highway engineering, civil engineering materials,
hydraulics, surveying and civil engineering management. - Identify design requirements and use analytical techniques and design practice to produce practical solutions relevant to the role of an Incorporated Engineer.
- Understand the iterative analytical nature of engineering problems in determining cost effective, sustainable and robust solutions utilising contemporary digital technologies, advanced computing techniques, and traditional manual methods.
- Use contemporary Codes of Practice and be aware of the regulatory framework in which design is practised. Demonstrate an appreciation of the role of the designer in achieving whole-life performance, especially about health and safety and sustainable development.
- Recognise the importance of leadership, teamwork and communication applicable to the role of an incorporated engineer and demonstrate relevant aspects, utilising appropriate interpersonal skills, whilst working both as a team member and individually.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the context in which civil engineering projects are delivered and managed through procurement, contract administration, planning and performance. Apply contemporary legislative requirements about health and safety and environmental impact to contextualise entry-level knowledge in civil engineering.
There are ways you may be able to fund your course. Sometimes it is possible to get sponsorship from a government body in your country. There are many different options, so have a look through the links carefully to see if they apply to you.
