There’s no pressure to pick a major. Instead, you can discover your niche. This isn’t a cookie-cutter education. Lakeland offers flexibility and a proven record of teaching in-demand skills.
Start with hands-on experience in class and in the field. You’ll learn about an extensive range of environmental sciences courses, such as:
- Ecology
- GPS and GIS software
- Rangeland Management
- Soil Classification
- Forestry
With this strong foundation, you can custom build your skill set in the 2nd year. You choose 4 elective courses. Options range from biology to zoology. Specific examples include:
- Fisheries Biology and Technologies
- Human Dimensions of the Environment
- Wetlands
- Wildlife Habitat Conservation
- Fisheries Management
- Environmental Site Assessment
- Basic Energy Principles
- Introduction to Wind, Solar or Geothermal
For example, if you want to work for a watershed protection group, take fisheries techniques and wetlands courses. If you want to minimize a pipeline’s disturbance, reclamation field methods and wildlife habitat will get you there.
You’re workforce-ready as a graduate. But, you may choose to do a double major or our applied degree.

Environmental consultants, government agencies and industry seek our graduates. You will have the flexibility to work for yourself or for an organization.
Career choices vary. Some examples are:
- environmental operations specialist working in an industry such as oil & gas, mining, agriculture, forestry or transportation.
- environmental regulatory specialist with the government.
- environmental technology with a consulting company.
