Lakeland College

About

Lakeland College goes far beyond expectations giving students hands-on learning through field trips, practicums, industry events, and work experience. Lakeland provides immersive experiences that shape futures and prepare students for the real world in one or two years.

Lakeland College is a Designated Learning Institute in Alberta, but the location near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border provides opportunities in both provinces.

Lakeland College goes far beyond expectations giving students hands-on learning through field trips, practicums, industry events, and work experience. Lakeland provides immersive experiences that shape futures and prepare students for the real world in one or two years.

Our campuses – one in Vermilion, Alberta, and one in Lloydminster, Alberta/Saskatchewan – are designed to guide students beyond the classroom, creating tangible environments where they can learn, lead, and manage. More than just practicums or work-study jobs, we create our programs with the future in mind, ensuring that after graduation, our students have the experience and knowledge to make a meaningful impact on their industries. Lakeland’s straightforward approach to practical education gives students real-world results.

Lakeland College has a 3700-acre farm that is used in both the Agricultural Sciences program and the Environmental Sciences program. The abundance of space allows students to engage in the fields and the barns and learn through hands-on experience. Lakeland’s student-managed farm ensures that students get experience making decisions and trying out new theories or technology before graduation.

Lakeland students thrive because their instructors and mentors trust them to think, learn, and act for themselves. That sense of trust empowers our students to believe in themselves and each other, leading to confident, collaborative graduates who know they are ready to thrive in their chosen fields and life.

Lakeland students find many ways to grow outside the classroom, through athletics, clubs, rodeo, students' associations, research, Indigenous initiatives, recreation facilities, public speaking, and more on campus and in the community.

Interactive learning environments lead to deeper connections and confident leaders.

That's why we have two modern, integrated campuses.

Located less than an hour apart, each campus features dedicated resources for more than 50 programs.

No matter the campus, you'll find your place at Lakeland.

Vermilion Campus

We're the third-oldest post-secondary institution in Alberta. Our Vermilion campus was established in 1913.

Over more than a century, this campus has grown and evolved to meet the needs of our students and community.

  • Animal Health Clinic
  • Agriculture Technology Centre
  • Dairy Learning Centre
  • Equine Centre

  • Modern labs and lecture theatres
  • Interior design studio and labs
  • Research Centre
  • Student Centre
  • Trades Centre

You're also steps away from everything, including 100-year-old trees and an arboretum, when you live on campus.

Lloydminster Campus

Our Lloydminster campus is connected under one roof, prime for collaboration and community spirit.

From one end of campus to the other, you'll pass by labs, lecture theatres, the library and more.

  • A spa and salon
  • Science and health care labs
  • Student lounge
  • Recreational Centre
  • Black Box Theatre

It also includes the Energy Centre, complete with two steam labs for real-world learning.

Around the corner from the weight room, you'll find the Vic Juba Community Theatre. There's also an on-site daycare.

Our vibrant campus is a handful of steps from a 200-acre park and within easy reach of restaurants, shops and other amenities

    Step One - Enrolment

Your first contact at Lakeland should be an enrolment specialist. They can be your advisor and guide from when you first begin looking at programs right up to registration day. And they'll be cheering you on through to convocation.

    Step Two - Explore Lakeland

Plan to visit our campuses - take a tour or come during Open House in October. Explore our programs. If you aren't sure, try our program match. Compare credentials, length and whether it's in person, online or blended delivery.

    Step Three - Application Process

Before you apply, you need to check the academic and admissions requirements. If you aren't from Alberta, you can see provincial subject and grade equivalencies. Learn all the steps in getting ready to apply. When you're ready, we'll guide you through the ApplyAlberta process.

Step Four - Registration and Orientation

You become a current student on registration day. Find your schedule, supply lists, residence move-in dates and more. We require you to register in person (online students, this doesn't apply to you).

    Please note:

    • All applicants, regardless of citizenship or country of origin, must meet English language proficiency (ELP). Review our English language requirements.
    • For final admission, you must provide an official transcript by the due date noted in your My Lakeland portal. For most programs, it is due approximately one month before the program start date. An official transcript is not a photocopy, a fax or an email unless it comes directly from the school or the Ministry of Education.
    • For information on how to order your official high school transcripts, please visit the ALIS Alberta website and scroll down to select your province or territory.

    Applying for a study permit

You need a study permit to come to Canada. Depending on where you live, the processing time can be just a few weeks or as long as a few months.

In the last decade, more and more foreign students, temporary workers and visitors have been coming to Canada. This means that processing times through Citizenship and Immigration Canada are taking longer.

To avoid disappointment, you should apply at least 4 to 6 months before your program starts.

Before you apply for a study permit, you will need:

    • the letter of acceptance from Lakeland College
    • a receipt for your tuition deposit
    • Provincial attestation letter from Lakeland College - you receive it after you pay your tuition deposit
    • Lakeland College's designated learning institution number( DLI) is O18777577472

    Funding for apprenticeship students

You may qualify for assistance beyond employment insurance (EI) while you take your training. Have a look at these options:

    • The Government of Canada supports the Apprentices website, outlining various funding options, including the Canada Apprenticeship Loan, Apprenticeship Incentive & Completion Grants, and the Alberta-Canada Job Grant.
    • Apprentices who are Alberta residents can now also apply for Alberta Student Aid to access provincial loans.

You may also want to visit the Alberta Tradesecrets website to learn about funding and scholarships that may be available to you.

    Funding for students with disabilities

Students with disabilities may qualify for additional financial assistance through the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities, and/or the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities. Some provinces also offer provincial grant funding.

To access any of these grants, you must first apply and qualify for student loan funding. For further details on how to apply, visit the student loan website for the province you reside in.

If you are notified by student loans that you do not qualify for these grants, there may still be supports available to you.

To inquire, please check out accessibility services at Lakeland College.

You may also want to check out the Scholarships for Students with Disabilities or Special Needs section of our external awards links page.

    Skill upgrading and work retraining

Grant funding may be available to adults who require upgrading or basic training to get or keep a job. Residents of Alberta should inquire with their local Alberta Works or Alberta Supports Centre about funding options. For residents of Saskatchewan, there are job training support programs available. Funding for military personnel and their families

The Canadian Forces Personnel Assistance Fund (CFPAF) administers a Student Line of Credit program (formerly known as the Education Assistance Loan Program) to meet the needs of the Canadian Forces Community in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

Veterans Affairs Canada administers a program called the Veterans' Education and Training Benefit, which will provide funding for college, university or technical education to Canadian Armed Forces Regular Force and Reserve Force Veterans with at least six years of military service.

Canada Company began in May 2006 and has become an influential voice advocating for our troops at home and abroad. One of its roles is to support children of deceased military members in achieving their post-secondary education goals. If you are a child of a deceased member of the military, you may qualify for funding through the Canada Company Scholarship Program or free tuition and services through Project Hero.

As of 2020, the Government of Alberta has made available the Alex Decoteau Award of Honour to Canadian Armed Forces members or family members of Canadian Armed Forces Members who are deceased or were permanently disabled while serving (must be a spouse/common-law partner or child). The family member/applicant must be enrolled at a public post-secondary institution in Alberta in a post-secondary program that leads to an academic credential.
