Key Summary

About: Learn to use gemologists' instruments and train your eye to identify gemstones. In this hands-on initiation at L'ÉCOLE you'll study markets such as Chanthaburi, Ratnapura and Bogota, inspect stones naked-eye and with hydrostatic scale, refractometer, polariscope and gemologists' scale. Two gemologists teach small-group classes; no prerequisites or materials required. You get a certificate and post-class resource lists.

Career Outcomes: You can use this initiation to pursue roles in the jewelry sector: gemologist, gemstone buyer/dealer, laboratory technician, appraiser, retail specialist, jewelry consultant, or continue as an informed collector and amateur expert. Or complement studies with further gemology training and certification.

Like a specialist, become comfortable with the gemologists' tools and train your eye to become a connoisseur.

During this course

Transported into the ambience of the superb precious stone markets--Chanthaburi in Thailand, Ratnapura in Sri Lanka, or Bogota in Colombia--you will learn to distinguish a different group of gemstones, which can seem very similar to the uninitiated. You will observe stones with your naked eye and then with the professionals' instruments: hydrostatic scale, refractometer, polariscope, and specific gemologists' scale.
