Key Summary
The master's programme in Sustainable Technology covers the concept of Industrial Ecology, focusing on the interaction of technical, economic, social and ecological systems and processes. Students will explore this interdisciplinary framework for designing and operating industrial systems interdependent on natural systems. Graduates will balance environmental and economic performance and lead the development of strategies for a sustainable future.
Year 1
At least three of the conditionally elective courses must be chosen in year 1.
At least 37,5 points of the conditionally elective courses must be chosen in year 1 and 2, whereof one of the courses AL2608, AL2142 or AL2161, have to be included for a degree.
for CENMI, one (1) of the conditionally elective courses AL2134, AL2115, AL2608 must be read.
For mapped civil engineering programs (CENMI, CMAST), the following applies: In case of the Master's program serves as a conclusion to an engineering degree, the degree requirements according to the education plan in the respective engineering degree programs are added.

Sustainable development
Graduates from KTH have the knowledge and tools for moving society in a more sustainable direction, as sustainable development is an integral part of all programmes. Sustainable development is at the core of the master's programme in Sustainable Technology since Industrial ecology is about steering today’s industry and society towards greater sustainability and resource efficiency. Several courses include system changes for achieving more sustainable production and consumption. Accordingly, all the sustainable development goals are of interest to the programme. The three sustainable development goals most apparent in the programme are:

- 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
- 13 Climate Action
Depending on your chosen elective courses, you can acquire specific tools and skills aimed at creating a sustainable future, such as system analytical tools, scenario methodologies such as backcasting, management systems in companies and environmental modelling. This will make you a strong candidate for working both in companies (in their sustainability offices), organisations such as the UN, Climate technology centres and a range of consultant companies dealing with environmental and sustainable projects.

KTH offers four different scholarship opportunities for master's studies. The KTH Scholarship covers the tuition fee of a one or two year master’s programme. The KTH One-Year Scholarship is aimed at current KTH master's programme students and covers the tuition fee of the second year of studies. The KTH Joint Programme Scholarship is aimed at students in certain joint programmes and covers the tuition fee for the study period spent at KTH. Deferment of student loans in the United States
KTH is an accredited institution at the US Department of Education and holds a Title IV 'Deferment Only' status (OPE ID 03274300). US students may defer payments on existing federal student loan accounts while enrolled in a master’s programme at KTH. The 'Deferment Only' status does not allow students to take out federal student loans for enrolment at KTH. However, the accreditation facilitates grant and loan opportunities for US students as many private student loan institutions in the US use this designation as a requirement to grant new loans. Students who wish to defer payments must contact their lending institution in the US.

Students graduating from the master’s programme in Sustainable Technology have a comprehensive range of knowledge and skills adapted to work with sustainable development, both in the private and public sectors. Having interdisciplinary experience and the ability to address complex problems by adopting a systems view and critical thinking makes the student a valuable employee in many industries and organisations.
Our graduates obtain positions as environmental consultants, advisors to local or regional authorities in planning and implementation processes or officers in government agencies, but also as environmental managers and advisors in both public and private companies. In view of the growing awareness of the need to build more long-term sustainable societies, graduates from the programme will have the skills to become key players in the development of strategies for a sustainable future. Graduates from the programme work at all types of companies and organisations, for example, Climate technology centre, Ragn Sells (waste management), Consultant companies such as WSP and SWECO, energy-related companies like E.ON, with research in companies and organisations like IVL Swedish environmental institute and municipalities. Many graduates go on to doctoral studies at KTH and elsewhere, mainly in their home countries.
