Introduction
The master’s programme in Civil and Architectural Engineering fosters graduates that will design and build our future homes and infrastructure, with a deep understanding of human conditions and needs and urgent demands for sustainability. In one of two specialisations, students explore either techniques for design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure or engineering design of buildings with a focus on performance and lifecycle perspective.
Civil and Architectural Engineering at KTH
This master's programme gives you advanced knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering as well as in the subjects of Civil or Architectural Engineering. You learn how to implement this knowledge by comprehensively understanding buildings and infrastructure as advanced technical systems. The programme offers advanced-level courses that often relate to real-life projects and the use of state-of-the-art tools for design and modelling.
The programme offers two main tracks: Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. The Civil Engineering track is devoted to techniques for the design, construction and maintenance of roads, streets, railway tracks, bridges and tunnels. The Architectural Engineering track focuses on engineering design and analysis of buildings with an emphasis on system-level performance from a lifecycle perspective. The teaching methods comprise a mix of lectures, exercises, projects and laboratory work. During the programme, students interact with industry in various ways, including project work in collaboration with industry experts and the involvement of industry experts as teachers.
The programme ends with a degree project relating to an issue within the field, focusing on investigating and analysing of a problem. The project is an opportunity for you to interact with both industry and current research.
Graduates from the programme will have gained:
- A strong ability to develop and design buildings and infrastructure with regard to human conditions and needs, and society's objectives for economically, socially and ecologically- sustainable development.
- A solid capability to communicate with different audiences verbally and in writing (English or Swedish), including the ability to discuss and promote results and findings. We achieve this by having oral and written presentations throughout the entire programme.
- Awareness of societal and ethical aspects, including economic and social issues and ecologically-sustainable development.
This is a two-year programme, 120 ECTS credits, in English. Graduates will be awarded a Master of Science degree. The programme is given at the KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Architecture and Built Environment (at KTH).
Curriculum
The two-year master's programme in Civil and Architectural Engineering consists of three terms of courses and one final term dedicated to the master's degree project. Each term consist of approximately 30 ECTS credits. The courses presented on this page apply to studies starting in autumn 2024.

Scholarships and Funding
KTH offers four different scholarship opportunities for master's studies. The KTH Scholarship covers the tuition fee of a one or two year master’s programme. The KTH One-Year Scholarship is aimed at current KTH master's programme students and covers the tuition fee of the second year of studies. The KTH Joint Programme Scholarship is aimed at students in certain joint programmes and covers the tuition fee for the study period spent at KTH. The KTH India Scholarship is aimed specifically at students from India.

Deferment of student loans in the United States
KTH is an accredited institution at the US Department of Education and holds a Title IV 'Deferment Only' status (OPE ID 03274300). US students may defer payments on existing federal student loan accounts while enrolled in a master’s programme at KTH. The 'Deferment Only' status does not allow students to take out federal student loans for enrolment at KTH. However, the accreditation facilitates grant and loan opportunities for US students as many private student loan institutions in the US use this designation as a requirement to grant new loans. Students who wish to defer payments must contact their lending institution in the US.

Graduates from the programme can pursue a professional career working on the design of buildings and infrastructure such as roads, railways, tunnels and bridges. Graduates often work as designers or project leaders in the construction industry, at consultancy firms, for municipalities or public authorities such as the road or rail administration. Graduates from the programme are found at companies and organisations such as Skanska, NCC, AFRY, PEAB, JM, Veidekke, Svevia, WSP and Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration). Furthermore, graduates can pursue an academic research career and continue towards doctoral studies. As a result of our cooperation with the industry, particularly during master's degree project work and other projects, students have the opportunity to meet people from the industry and make first contact, which often leads to job opportunities.
