What you will study
The course is taught by internationally-recognised researchers and practising expert biomedical scientists, ensuring that the programme content reflects current practice.
There are four taught modules, plus an extended three-month research project, involving the design and practice of research with opportunities for securing research placements at top UK industry and healthcare providers.
The taught modules consist of two core modules and one specialist module focusing on biomedical science, with a specialism choice between haematology and medical microbiology. In addition, one core module focuses on business in practice, linking management studies with careers in science. The business module develops competencies in finance, accounting, marketing, organisational management, entrepreneurship and leadership/team skills. As well as subject knowledge, you will develop written, oral, analytical and employability skills appropriate to the master's level.
In addition to the standard 12-month programme, this course is offered as a two-year programme with an optional integrated work placement component. This option is available for both international and full-time home/EU students of this course.

For a student to go on placement they are required to pass every module the first time with no reassessments. It is the responsibility of individual students to find a suitable paid placement. Students will be supported by our dedicated placement team in securing this opportunity.

What's on offer

- An academic supervisor is allocated to all placement students.
- Should encompass 200 hours of work during the period October to April alongside studies.
Professional experience could include
- Conducting discrete pieces of research, investigation, and fact-finding.
- Supporting laboratory work such as ensuring that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available for all lab materials.
- Assessing, archiving, sorting, transcribing, and filing scientific documents and files.
- Taking minutes in meetings involving scientific content.
