During your Business Management International Year One you will study the following modules:

Business Statistics and IT

This module is about managing business information. The course will enable you to appreciate, understand and use the mutual dependency of mathematics and information technology in solving business problems. The course aims to familiarise you with mathematics techniques and to help you appreciate how an understanding of various interrelated mathematical topics is essential in business. You will also learn to use common business software packages and appreciate how an understanding of their collective use is essential in business and in supporting business problem-solving.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to: understand and use mathematical techniques to solve business problems; describe how business organisations use IT and mathematics in order to function more effectively and sustainably; use IT-based models to analyse data and information using appropriately chosen technology, such as web pages, spreadsheets or databases and describe how IT is used to communicate solutions to business problems.

Economics for Business

This module will introduce you to the external context in which organisations operate and will equip you with the skills and knowledge of economics for business that is essential in the current business environment. The course covers a wide range of business issues, including the external environmental influences faced by business organisations; key concepts relevant to the study of management and economics; economic and industrial policy and the different legal and organisational structures which can be adopted by businesses. You will also develop an appreciation of how issues of globalisation, corporate social responsibility, ethics and achieving a sustainable environment affect the environment in which organisations operate.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to: relate to the realities of the external environment that affect management in the pursuit of organisational objectives; comprehend the key internal and external factors influencing firms’ functions in the economy and understand and work within the constraints of the external and internal organisational environment that influences and impacts on the success of firms.

Academic English Skills

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at university. Our Academic English programme is validated by UK ENIC, the UK government agency responsible for providing information and expert opinion on qualifications and skills worldwide.

You will develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related academic skills, including the processes of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will also develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language required to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence in an academic context.

Alongside your classes, your studies will be supported by an online learning platform, providing you with a range of tasks and activities specifically designed to develop and extend your language and academic skills outside the classroom and to give you more control over your own learning.

Marketing Practice

This module is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of the nature of the marketing function and of what marketers do. While underpinned by marketing theory, the module focuses on the practical application of marketing in organisations, its relationship to other business functions, and the impact that marketing can have on an organisation. The course will help you to develop an understanding of the marketing function in modern business and non-profit organisations, as well as an appreciation of the relationship between marketing and other business functions. You will also learn to appraise and develop coherent marketing plans for a range of organisation types and develop your own intellectual and research skills in the area of marketing.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the marketing concept and how it applies to modern business and non-profit organisations; define marketing objectives for an organisation and demonstrate an appreciation of how these may be achieved via marketing plans; demonstrate an understanding of a variety of qualitative and quantitative market research techniques and be able to select appropriate techniques for solving marketing problems; demonstrate an understanding of segmentation, defining targets and positioning strategies for specified brands; demonstrate familiarity with the elements of operational marketing and the ability to select an appropriate balance of elements to achieve marketing objectives and research, develop and present a viable new-product development plan.

Organisational Behaviour

The module will introduce you to core topics and concepts about the behaviour and management of people in work situations. It is also aimed at developing graduate attributes, particularly the skills, experience, and knowledge that you will need to successfully navigate and access employment. In this course, you will learn about core topics and concepts relating to individual and group behaviour in organisations and also gain the opportunity to evaluate and apply topics, theories and concepts of organisational behaviour, to your own professional development.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to: understand and take ownership of your own personal academic journey; demonstrate theoretical knowledge and understanding of the key organisational behaviour topics and concepts; evaluate and apply theoretical knowledge of organisational behaviour and demonstrate the key skills, experience, and knowledge necessary for future employment.
