Kent State University (KSU), established in 1910 as the Ohio State Normal College at Kent, began as a teacher-training institution. It was renamed Kent State Normal School in 1911 and later became Kent State University in 1935. The university has grown to include eight campuses across Northeast Ohio, with the main campus situated on 953 acres in Kent. KSU offers over 300 degree programs and is recognized as a top-tier research university by the Carnegie Classification, holding an R1 status for very high research activity.

Kent State has a rich history marked by significant events, notably the May 4, 1970, shootings, where National Guard troops opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War, resulting in four deaths and nine injuries. This tragic incident became a pivotal moment in the anti-war movement and is commemorated annually on campus . Beyond its historical significance, Kent State is known for its academic excellence, with strong programs in fashion design, aeronautics, and nursing, among others.
