Introduction

Delivered jointly by the School of Humanities and the Keele Management School, the MA in Global Media and Management will equip you with specialist skills in media production and media management. You will develop high-level communication, problem-solving and other transferable skills that will enable you to excel in your career.

Working closely with industry partners ensures that the programme combines academic rigour with business-relevant content, equipping you with the skills and knowledge needed for a wide range of careers. After completing the programme our students have worked for top media companies such as the Kobalt Music Group, one of the world’s leading independent music publishers.

One of the key benefits of the programme is its flexibility. In addition to core modules in Media and Management that all students study, you will also have the opportunity to choose optional modules and focus your study in your personal areas of interest. The advantage of this is that you work with different academic staff and students, developing new perspectives and personal networks.

When you have completed the taught modules you will do a large project where you can further develop your knowledge in a specific area of media production, management consultancy or media research.

How The Course Is Taught

You will be taught by a range of experts in theory and practice from both the Media and Management Departments.

The MA enables you to benefit from research-led teaching in the areas of Media Communications and Internal Business Management. Modules are generally taught through a combination of seminars, workshops, small group discussions, individual supervision and computer laboratory classes. Practical use is made of standard educational software and data sources. There is a strong emphasis on independent learning.

Teaching Facilities

The programme is taught in specialist facilities dedicated to the Media and Management programmes. You will have 24/7 access to the Media Building which houses extensive digital media production facilities including film and photography studios and digital post-production labs. You will also have access to professional media production equipment and software as part of the programme (no additional costs are involved).

On the Management side of things, you will have access to the Bloomberg Suite which is one of the world’s most powerful and widely used platforms of information in the finance industry.

Assessment

Assessment is diverse through the use of essays, skills portfolios, reflective diaries, exams, workbooks, presentations, marketing plans and reports, and practical projects. The pass mark is 50%. Merit will be awarded where students obtain 60% or over for the dissertation (or equivalent project or performance) and an average of 60% on their other coursework. A distinction will be awarded where students obtain 70% or over for the dissertation and an average of 70% in their other coursework.

Semester 1 runs from the end of September to the end of January, with an assessment period in January.

Semester 2 runs from the last week of January to the middle of June, with the assessment period in June.

Semester 3 involves the production of the dissertation, media project, consultancy project placement pathway* or entrepreneurship pathway** and runs from June to the end of September. There will be no formal group classes during this period, but students may arrange individual consultation with their supervisors.
