Introduction

The accounting and business environment is constantly evolving, and the application of data analytics is changing the skillset employers are looking for. Our Accounting with Business Analytics BSc brings together two complementary subjects so you can develop key skills to prepare you for your career after graduation. It blends studying modules in both disciplines and focuses on enhancing your own professional development so you can pursue a career in this dynamic field.

In your first year you will begin to develop your understanding of quantitative data analysis, considering the different mathematical and statistical methods that can be applied. We will provide you with a solid grounding in the sourcing, management and storing of all types of data and give you an introduction in using SQL (Structured Query Language) in the manipulation of databases.

Careers involving business analytics will require high levels of expertise in using Excel software and we aim to ensure that you have the opportunity to improve your skills in using Excel to an advanced level. Your accounting studies will start with thefundamental principles of accounting and enhance your knowledge of financial accounting including the preparation and analysis of key financial information.

As you progress on the course you will study the key theories of statistics and gain experience using industry standard software such as The Bloomberg Terminal to extract economic, business and financial information. You will learn about the different types of data and gain confidence in your analysis and communication skills using various methods including Tableau, which is widely used in the data analytics field and Excel to communicate your findings in a visually appealing, easy to understand way to a wide range of audiences.

How analytics are used in the decision making process is explored alongside progression to higher accounting modules such as advanced financial reporting looking at complex accounting standards and the preparation of consolidated financial statements. Advanced management accounting will build on previous studies in this area and provide an opportunity to explore contemporary developments. The audit framework is also a core final year module providing valuable insight into the skills required as an auditor in practice, making sure you are well equipped for the world of work.

From the analytics sides, using the skills youโ€™ve gained in years one and two will help you develop focused data visualisations on our advanced module in year 3. This includes studying how you can manage multiple datasets, prepare data for analytics and undertake complex data analysis. You can also further develop your skills in using Tableau with the option to obtain Tableau Certified User status.

The role of an accountant in business is evolving. The detailed evaluation of company performance with knowledge of data governance is a valuable tool to support strategies and maximise performance.
