Introduction

Modern accountants need a range of knowledge and skills and the Accounting BSc at Keele University allows you to fully explore the breadth of this dynamic subject. You will develop essential knowledge and professional skills, be encouraged to improve your questioning and investigative techniques, establish ethical strengths, and practice constant attention to detail.

Our programme has been designed with the expectation that you have no prior knowledge of accounting and starts by teaching you the fundamental principles of the subject. Once you have learnt these you quickly progress to engage with more challenging, complex and contemporary areas of accounting.

In your first year you will explore key subjects such as business law and microeconomics, improve your understanding of financial accounting, and study modules that focus on quantitative data to develop techniques for preparing models and presenting data.

To complement these core accounting areas you will be offered optional modules that will allow you to explore other areas of business. Current first year modules introduce themes such as human resource management, microeconomics, international business and managing in a changing society.

As you progress through year two you will enhance your know-how about cost and management accounting methods incorporating forecasting, budgeting and product costing. You will study personal taxation, using the latest rules and rates issued by His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), further your study in the area of international financial accounting, and begin to analyse accounting in the public sector.

Optional modules in year two allow further study in a particular area, or provide an opportunity to try something different! These may include modules exploring themes such as corporate governance and social responsibility, business taxation, focusing on your professional development and the opportunity to gain experience of exploring statistics using Bloomberg.

The final year challenges you to advance your skills in crucial areas of accounting such as learning how to apply management accounting approaches to business decision making, and developing your understanding in the set up of and management of investment portfolios. Other core modules will advance your financial reporting skills and develop insight into the importance of audit and the regulatory framework.
