Introduction
The Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) program at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering bridges the gap between technology and business by equipping students with the technical expertise and leadership skills they need to advance their careers in the fast-paced world of technology.
About the Program
MSEM is a small cohort experience with management and technical track. The management track is a project and problem-based curriculum. Our program is flexible and allows students to take an abundance of electives.
All students in the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) Program enroll in The Practice of Consulting, a course during intersession of the first year. In the fall of your first year, you will choose an immersion project – some are abroad, others near JHU – and then over intersession, in teams, you will work intensively with your clients, listening to their problems and researching potential solutions. Currently, the trips abroad are to locations in Israel, Denmark, Portugal, and Spain. There is also a local option at the JHU Hospital in Baltimore.

Curriculum
All MSEM students will choose a technical track and also participate in a cohort program, where the entering class will take three required management full-semester courses in the fall & seminar:
- Strategies in Accounting and Finance
- Strategies for Innovation and Growth
- Professional Presentations
- MSEM
An Intersession course is required: The Practice of Consulting, which can involve international travel if the student desires.
The remaining required management courses are half-semester courses offered in the spring & seminar:
- Managing People/Resolving Conflict
- Leading Change
- MSEM Seminar
In addition to the Management Track, all MSEM students must also complete five advanced engineering and science courses (at least fifteen credits) in a technical track in consultation with their faculty advisor. Please note that the courses listed in each track serve as a general guide, but courses are subject to change. Students must work with their technical advisor on appropriate courses for degree completion.
