We focus on solving critical problems at the nexus of public health and engineering through research in the areas of air pollution and cardio-respiratory diseases, energy management and alternative technologies, environmental chemistry, environmental resource quality, food systems, and more. We offer full-time and part-time degree programs.

About the Program
The Department’s cross-divisional affiliation enables us to offer a range of interdisciplinary graduate programs at the intersection of public health and engineering. Our objective is to develop solutions to key challenges in local, national, and global environmental health, with impacts from the molecular to population-wide level. Our graduates are prepared for careers in academia, government, national laboratories, and the private sector.

Curriculum
Master of Arts in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MA)
The MA in Geography and Environmental Engineering is open to students with undergraduate degrees in social sciences or the humanities. Three semesters of coursework are typically required to complete the degree, with the option to complete an independent research project. Students can focus on one of the Department’s areas of interest or construct their own program that complements and expands their undergraduate experience.
Master of Science in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MS) Onsite | Full-Time | 9 months–1.5 years
This MS degree is designed to prepare students with a science undergraduate background to enter the engineering industry or continue further study at the doctoral level. The MS degree is open to students with undergraduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and other scientific disciplines. Students can choose from tracks or design a curriculum in consultation with their advisor, which best fits their career goals.
Masters of Science in Engineering in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MSE) Onsite | Full-Time | 9 months–1.5 years
This program is designed to prepare students with an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree or demonstrated equivalent to enter the workforce as leaders in the field or to go on to further study at the doctoral level. Students have five tracks to choose from and can tailor their electives to their career and research goals.

Curriculum Overview
- Complete a minimum of 30 credits, following the chosen concentration curriculum. At least 15 credits must be from departmental classes.
- Complete an optional independent research project, submitted as a formal essay (typically adds one semester to time-to-degree).
- Take core classes on data analytics, environmental chemistry, and engineering management, such as risk and Decision Analysis, Aquatic and Biofluid Chemistry, Air Pollution, Environmental Health and Engineering Systems Design.
