Key Summary
The Department of Kinesiology is dedicated to the development of future leaders in professions that maximize the potential of individuals and society through physical activity, exercise, and sport. The department offers a Master of Science degree with a focus on exercise physiology that includes both a thesis and a non-thesis track.
This program helps students:
- Identify and describe important issues relevant to physical activity, exercise, and sport science.
- Educate others about the relevance of physical activity, exercise, and sport to individuals and to society.
- Develop and administer safe, effective, and scientifically based physical activity, exercise, and sports programs that address individual, community, and societal needs.
- Enable students to evaluate the quality of information germane to the disciplines of physical activity, exercise, and sport science.
- Develop the skills needed to conduct quality research.
- Conceive a cognate area of study within the professional field in which they intend to work.
Many students enrolled in this program receive graduate assistantships.
Graduate assistantships provide students with valuable professional experiences. Depending on the assistantship assignment, responsibilities may include preparing and facilitating undergraduate laboratory experiences, facilitating physical activity, planning and implementing outreach programs, delivering short lectures, grading, and assisting with administrative tasks. Graduate assistants are required to perform 20 hours per week. View a list of possible assistantships on our website.
All assistantships cover all or most of the cost of tuition and offer a stipend that is usually sufficient to cover the cost of housing, meals, and other expenses. See the link below for more information about graduate assistantships.
The following core curriculum is required for all students:

- KIN 541 Physical Activity Epidemiology
- KIN 542 Exercise Across the Lifespan
- KIN 644 Cardiorespiratory Exercise Physiology
- KIN 645 Muscular and Hormonal Exercise Physiology
- KIN 646 Metabolic Aspects of Exercise
- KIN 650 Exercise Testing, Evaluation, and Prescription
- KIN 655 Research Techniques
Students are also required to complete one of the following tracks:
Thesis Track (required to complete for 33 credits for graduation):
- KIN 700. Thesis (6 credits)
- Electives in consultation with advisor (6 credits)
Non-Thesis Track (required to complete 36 credits for graduation):
- KIN 681. Internship in Exercise Science (3-9 credits)OR
- KIN 697. Directed Research in Kinesiology
- Electives in consultations with an advisor (12 credits)
Note: KIN 681 credits exceeding 3 credits can be counted towards elective requirements.
