Bachelor in Criminal Justice

Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at I.U. Kokomo will receive the best of two worlds: an education in the liberal arts tradition where students learn to reason and to think critically and an education grounded in experiential learning. Criminal justice majors take courses that introduce them to diverse areas of the criminal justice system, teach them to apply problem-solving skills to real issues in criminal justice, and allow them to explore a variety of criminal justice careers. Students are encouraged to participate in internships and/or research practicums where they gain practical experience and meet professionals in the field. Students will have the opportunity to meet with criminal justice practitioners and participate in local, state, and national events with the two criminal justice student-led organizations on campus. Students with a degree in criminal justice have the opportunity to enter the workforce in a variety of careers including law enforcement, corrections, victim advocacy, homeland security, emergency management, and loss prevention. Graduates of our program may choose to further their education by pursuing graduate degrees in criminal justice/criminology, social work, sociology, and law.

Major Requirements

All major courses require a grade of C- or higher to count toward the major.

All Eight Courses below are required for the major (24 credits)

• CJHS-J 101 American Criminal Justice System (Pre-req for all other criminal justice courses)
• CJHS-J 201 Theoretical Foundations of Criminal Justice Policies
• CJHS-J 202 Criminal Justice Data, Methods, and Research
• CJHS-J 301 Substantive Criminal Law
• CJHS-J 306 Criminal Courts
• CJHS-J 321 American Policing
• CJHS-J 331 Corrections
• CJHS-J 305 Juvenile Justice System

Criminal Justice Electives

Any six additional 200, 300 or 400 level criminal justice courses are required. Any course offered in C.J.H.S. not listed as a required course may be taken to complete elective credits. Homeland security/emergency management courses may count as a criminal justice elective. (18 credits) Criminal Justice majors are not eligible for certificates in Correctional Management and Supervision and/or a Certificate in Public Safety as these are all C.J.H.S. courses. Students may select courses from these electives to fulfill the certificate in Homeland Security.
