School Description Common Form The Institute of Social Sciences (ICS-ULisboa), a School of the University of Lisbon, a Research & Development Unit and an Associate Laboratory of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), is an internationally recognized research center.

Here, innovative research is conducted on contemporary societies, addressing their legacies and confronting their challenges, while promoting excellence in research and fostering dialogue between science and society on topics related to Inclusion and Vulnerabilities, Citizenship, Sustainability, and Memories and Legacies. We place a strong emphasis on advanced scientific training, offering doctoral and master’s programs as well as postgraduate courses for specialization and capacity building. Teaching is closely linked to the theoretical and methodological approaches developed in ongoing research at ICS-ULisboa, reflecting the diversity of the societies we study.

The various advanced training programs, as well as short courses, reflect the strong multidisciplinary identity of ICS-ULisboa and its close and productive connection with the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese university system as a whole. Advanced training encourages interdisciplinary pathways within the social sciences and humanities, while also building bridges with disciplines outside the social sciences, such as the health and earth sciences. Postgraduate education is one of the pillars of ICS-ULisboa. In master’s and doctoral programs, students benefit from interdisciplinary training across multiple disciplines, methodologies, and theories of the social sciences, within an open and collegial learning environment that fosters autonomy and creativity in the development of research projects leading to master’s dissertations and doctoral theses. ICS-ULisboa offers exceptional working conditions and international networks.
