Introduction

Construction Management is a professional field that focuses on each part of the construction process of any built environment. It typically encompasses commercial building sites or multi-unit residential sites. Construction Management of the site may be maintained by a general contractor or a separate entity, and the construction management personnel or company answers to the developer and is responsible for overseeing every aspect of the project from start to finish.

About this Programme

The B.Sc. in Construction Management is a degree programme offered via online distance learning over a period of 2 years part-time. The programme is specifically designed to facilitate industry professionals including; Engineers, Architects, Technicians, Foremen, Qualified Carpentry and Joinery Craft persons, or another Qualified level 6 construction industry professionals. The programme prepares graduates to assume technical, management, academic and research and development level positions within in the construction industry.

Organisation of the Programme

The course is delivered over two years. The course consists of twelve subject modules – three per semester and learners may take as few modules as they wish and complete the programme over a number of years to suit their own circumstances.

Professionally qualified and experienced Civil Engineers, Architects and Quantity Surveyors will teach the various modules which are summarised on the following pages.

The programme includes a significant amount of online testing in each of the modules and the objective of the final written and practical examinations is to ensure the validity of the online test results. Written examinations will be held in the Institute (or an alternative approved examination centre) at the end of each semester.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a related Level 6 National/Higher Certificate or a Senior Craft Certificate (Merit award) or equivalent and two years relevant work experience.

With the introduction of the NFQ in 2003, changes were made to the education system in Ireland which meant that some awards were discontinued. However, these awards are included in the NFQ as legacy awards.

Applicants with other qualifications and/or with relevant experience will also be considered through IT Sligo’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Please contact the Programme coordinator to discuss.

All lectures, tutorials and practical work are delivered through English. It is vitally important that students who are not native English speakers have the required standard on entry to ensure they gain maximum value from their time at IT Sligo. The required minimum proficiency score in English required for entry to IT Sligo is 5.5 IELTS score for undergraduate degrees.

  • BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management. This two-year, part-time, Level 8 programme is recognised by the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) as fulfilling the academic requirements for corporate membership.
  • BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying. This two-year, part-time, Level 8 programme is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) / Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI).
