It's a great time to be doing graduate studies in statistics! The astonishing amount of data being collected today is literally transforming science and the skills of statisticians are in demand more than ever.
The advent of "Big data" is very exciting for statisticians, making statistical thinking a centerpiece of scientific inquiry in many areas of science and raising new questions for researchers interested in applied, methodological, and theoretical questions.
The M.S. in Statistical Science degree is intended to prepare a student for a career as a professional statistician working in business, government, or industry.
Degree Requirements
Course Requirements:
A total of 31 credit hours, including the following courses:
- STAT-S 610 Introduction to Statistical Computing
- STAT-S 611: Statistical Computing
- STAT-S 621: Fundamentals of Statistical Methods and Theory I
- STAT-S 622: Fundamentals of Statistical Methods and Theory II
- STAT-S 631: Applied Linear Models I
- STAT-S 632: Applied Linear Models II
- STAT-S 690: Statistical Consulting
- STAT-S 692: Statistical Consulting Internship or STAT-S 799: Research in Statistics
To receive the degree of MSSS, the student must fulfill one of the following options:
A. Consulting Internship (STAT-S 692)
The student who elects this option will follow STAT-S 690 with a 1-semester internship at the Indiana Statistical Consulting Center (ISCC). The internship will count for 3 credit hours, which may be applied toward the required total of 31 credit hours. The student will work under the direct supervision of a professional consultant and will produce project reports that can be shared with clients, and be assembled into a portfolio that can be shared with prospective employers. This option is recommended for students who intend to seek employment after receiving the MSSS degree.
B. Research Paper (STAT-S 799)
The student who elects this option will work under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Any IU faculty member with a full, part-time, or adjunct appointment in the Department of Statistics is eligible to supervise an MSSS research paper. In addition to the written paper, the student should also report his/her work in an oral presentation to the department. A student who pursues this option will register for 3 credit hours, which may be applied toward the required total of 31 credit hours. This option is recommended for students who intend to pursue doctoral studies after receiving the MSSS degree.
The remaining 6 credit hours can be from any graduate statistics courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.
