Key Summary

    About : The Integrated Masters Degree in Veterinary Medicine provides comprehensive training in veterinary practice and animal care. The program aims to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of veterinary medicine.
    Career Outcomes : Graduates typically find opportunities in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, and research institutions. They may pursue roles as veterinarians, animal nutritionists, or veterinary consultants, addressing animal health and welfare needs in various environments.

The course (Veterinary Medicine) was created in 1994 and has been an Integrated Master's Degree (MIMV) since 2007. The course is approved by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE).
The course lasts 5 and a half years (11 semesters and 330 ECTS credits), starting with the study of the structure, physiology and behavior of healthy animals in order to, from the third year onwards, address the diseases that affect them and the clinical and surgical procedures needed to treat them. In later years, the responsibilities of veterinarians in protecting human health are also covered.

The aim is to enable students to:

  • Protect (by advising and acting) the health and welfare of animals, as well as the principles of biosecurity;
  • Diagnose health problems affecting animals or animal populations;
  • Care for and treat animals, implementing appropriate management protocols and treatments;
  • Act at all times in the interests of public health, being a sentinel and ensuring animal health, food safety and animal production, in accordance with the One Health perspective: animal, human and environmental health.

The practical training of veterinarians is supported by numerous institutions, companies and services. In the field of scientific research, the MIMV maintains close cooperation with important research institutes, namely: the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR); the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S); the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research, IP (INIAV); and the Associated Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS).
