Introduction
At Husson University, the Elementary Education program is designed to prepare individuals for elementary and middle school (K-6) teaching certification. Throughout the coursework and classroom experiences, students learn and apply best practices for all major academic areas, including reading, math, science, and social studies. The program is comprised of a combination of professional education and liberal arts coursework. In addition, the program integrates substantial experiential learning through clinical, practicum, and student teaching placements in a variety of classrooms. Husson has developed the Elementary Education curriculum sequence to support the requirements of both the PRAXIS CORE and PRAXIS II examinations. The program has been approved by the Maine State Department of Education and incorporates Maine’s Teaching Standards and the Maine Learning Results.
Elementary Education program graduates may choose to teach in the private or public school classrooms. Middle school instruction may focus upon one academic subject area, drawing upon the teacher’s area of concentration. Husson University prides itself on its high professional placement rate. While beginning teacher salaries vary nationally, career opportunities are becoming more plentiful as an increased demand for educators is projected over the next decade.
