Preliminary Recognition of Certificates:

All international applicants who do not have a German university entrance qualifications must have their qualifications recognized by the Studienkolleg of the HTWG. To get your certificates preliminarily recognized please upload the following documents at the application form of the Studienkolleg Konstanz:

- Curriculum vitae
- A copy of your passport
- Copies of your certificates (high school diploma and, if applicable, bachelor’s degree + transcript of records, and grading system of your previous university)
- Translations of your certificates, if they are not in English or French
- APS certificate, if applicable - details on the website of the Studienkolleg

Final Recognition of Certificates: To meet the enrollment requirements, you will need an official recognition document (paper document, signed and stamped) issued by the Studienkolleg. To obtain this document, you will be informed about further steps after a positive preliminary recognition.

Language Requirements:

All applicants to all our programs must have B2 level English skills or higher. It is highly recommended, to have A2 German skills when they start their studies.

For other programs than the listed ones, students, however, can only enroll after completing the German language exam “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” (DSH), which is regularly offered in different cities. See the Studienkolleg website for alternative German tests.

Orientation Test:

The Orientation Test is a mandatory admission requirement for all applicants to universities in Baden-Württemberg. It is designed to assess your academic qualifications and determine whether your educational background meets the standards required for studying in Germany.

You must complete this test as part of your application process and upload the certificate of participation to the portal (please note, there is no need to upload your results or grades). For more information and to take the test, please visit: https://www.was-studiere-ich.de/dashboard and complete the "Interessenstest" (test of interests), which takes about 15 minutes.

International students from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland

You do not need a visa to enter Germany. However, after your arrival in Germany, you must register at the Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt).

International students from countries with no student visa requirement

Please check the website of the German Foreign Office to see if your home country is one of the countries where students do not need a visa to study in Germany. Once you have arrived in Germany and have found a place to live, you will need to register at the Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) and apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners' Registration Office (Meldebehörde für Ausländer).

International Students from countries with a student visa requirement

Students from some countries are subject to visa requirements. In this case, you must apply for a visa in your home country before you travel to Germany. Allow enough time to apply for the visa, as it can take several months for the visa to be issued.

Check the website of the German Foreign Office for current visa requirements for all countries. Contact the German embassy or consulate in your home country for more information. The addresses of the German missions abroad can be found on the German Foreign Office website.

The visa you need to apply for depends, among other things, on whether or not you already have a permit. Do not enter the country with a tourist visa under any circumstances! A tourist visa cannot be subsequently converted into a student visa needed to apply and study in Germany.

The cafeteria, located directly on the Rhine, offers both warm and cold meals, making sure no one has to study on an empty stomach. Right in front of the cafeteria is one of the highlights on campus (and in Konstanz): our very own beach bar, where students and staff go to kick off their shoes and have a drink at the end of the workday. We also have a student-run café on campus where you can meet your friends for a very reasonably-priced cup of coffee.
