Key Summary
Inspired by the peace philosophies of Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the founder of the Tokai University Educational System (TES), Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) strives to create and foster global citizens who embrace peace, democracy, and pluralism. The Peace Studies Certificate Program manifests the HTIC and TES missions to promote peace through internationally-oriented education. It seeks to bring together students who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for conflict resolution, risk management, and peace-building.
The Peace Studies Certificate Program offers students the opportunity to study and promote peace in interpersonal, institutional, societal and/or global terms. The program benefits students who want to major in areas such as International Relations, Conflict Management, Risk Management, Social Work, Psychology, Education/Teaching, Development, and Justice.

Program Focus
In the Peace Studies Certificate Program, students explore sources of conflicts and various approaches to create “negative” and “positive” peace.
The program emphasizes broad, multidisciplinary areas/issues such as:
- Conflict Resolution and Peace-building
- Security Studies
- Socio-economic Development
- Cross-cultural Communication
- Democracy and Pluralism
- Environmental Protection and Biodiversity
- Sustainable Resource Development
- Human Rights
Certificates of Completion
Students who successfully complete the Peace Studies program will receive Certificates of Completion with their Associate in Arts diplomas.
Program Requirements
- Students must meet all requirements for an HTIC A.A. degree
- All courses taken for the Peace Studies Certificate Program can also be applied to the student’s A.A. degree
The Liberal Arts Program offers a Peace Studies Concentration for students interested in pursuing international relations with an emphasis on peace. In addition to meeting the requirements for any of the three (3) degree options, students in the Peace Studies program are required to take:
- IS 200 – Sophomore Seminar (1 credit); research paper must be on a topic related to Peace Studies
AND 12 credits earned from the following courses:
- IS 196 Peace Studies Seminar (required for graduation and offered the Fall, Winter and Spring terms)
- ENG 259 Literature of Peace
- JOURN 105 The Press and Society
- SCI 210 Environmental Issues
- AMST 212 Contemporary American Issues: Global Issues
- POLSCI 220 International Relations
- POLSCI 222 Issues in International Relations
- POLSCI 273 Nonviolent Political Solutions
- SOC 256 Race and Ethnic Relations in Hawai‘i
- IS 192 Service Learning
- And any other courses designated Peace Studies (PS)
