Key Summary
About: The Bachelor of Science in Human Science in Fitness, Recreation & Sports Management at Hardin-Simmons University is a flexible School of Kinesiology, Health & Recreation degree that allows 22 credit hours of electives and requires a minor. It doesn't lead to teacher certification; students seeking public school coaching should choose a certification-eligible major. The curriculum includes an Outdoor Education Activities course with opportunities to earn Texas Parks & Wildlife certifications and hands-on work in the Human Performance Lab at Fletcher Fitness Center.
Career Outcomes: Graduates enter group/personal training, recreation management, sports marketing, event coordination, athletics administration, and parks management.
Fitness, Recreation & Sports Management is the most flexible degree in the School of Kinesiology, Health & Recreation. It allows for 22 credit hours of electives and is the only degree in the School that requires a minor.
This degree does not provide the opportunity to be certified as a teacher. If you want to coach in public schools, it is strongly suggested you work on a major that allows you to become a certified teacher. If you major in Fitness, Recreation, and Sports Management, you can’t minor in Coaching or Exercise Science.
The degree requirements also include completing our Outdoor Education Activities course. Students in this course have the opportunity to earn certifications in Hunting Education, Boating Education & Bowhunting Education through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
Students within this program will gain hands-on experience in the Human Performance Lab. The lab is located on the second floor of Fletcher Fitness Center.

- Non-profit (YMCA, etc.)
- Military
- College/University (intramurals, club sports, etc.)

This list is far from inclusive. You may use the minor to tailor the degree to interests and career preparation. If running a business is part of your plans, you might consider a minor in the Kelley College of Business. If communications & marketing are going to be your future, you could minor in some form of communications. This is what gives this major its flexibility; you can focus electives and minors toward your interests.
