Ilsong Memorial Library formed the Central Library Construction Planning Committee (chaired by Professor Sil Han) in May 2002. After benchmarking leading university libraries both in Korea and abroad and holding public hearings, the library officially opened in March 2006 following approximately two years of construction. The library was named in honor of the late Dr. Deok-sun Yoon, the founder of Hallym University, who wished for the youthful spirit to flourish at the foot of Bonguisan Mountain, and is a reinforced concrete building with one underground and five above-ground floors. It has a building area of 3,987.2 m2 and a total floor area of 18,026.35 m2, and it houses a collection of 1 million books and provides 1,983 reading seats.
Ilsong Memorial Library emphasizes openness to sense a bright world like a large window open toward the world, which deviates from the closed image of conventional libraries.
Stone and transparent glass are used as the main materials of the building exterior, which simultaneously emphasizes classical majesty and a futuristic image of open space.
In addition, the functions of the library are classified by the floors on which the administrative space and general reading rooms are on the 1st floor, data rooms are on the 2nd·3rd·5th floors, and the C. Square and Creativity Convergence rooms are installed on the 4th floor for "studying while having fun.”
All materials are provided through specialized services by topic, and information is provided at the Comprehensive Data Room and Reading Room by establishing a perfect wired·wireless network. The Ilsong Memorial Library will become the best library in Korea, providing maximum convenience to users as an information center with cutting-edge facilities equipped with group study rooms (18 rooms) and researcher study rooms (4 rooms) for group research and seminars.
Ilsong Memorial Library will not only fulfill its role as a comprehensive academic center with functions as a traditional library and modern electronic library, but also have various roles as a solid foothold for the knowledge information society in the 21st century by providing space for users to meet and rest.
