Key Summary
The Corcoran Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts attracts students who want to expand the material and intellectual dimensions of what they create. Our curriculum encourages a rigorous and experimental approach to art that motivates students to enhance their creativity in the studio and beyond. Within our program, students engage in critical and creative relationships between content and form, investigate how art and history intersect, and study diverse contexts of creative production.
Students in our MFA program benefit from a dynamic community of peers, visiting artists, and knowledgeable faculty members. All students receive individual studio spaces where they can develop their artistic practice. Access to George Washington University’s research resources allows students to enhance their practice with interdisciplinary considerations. Furthermore, Washington, D.C.’s abundant galleries and cultural events offer creative opportunities for students outside the classroom.
The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) offers funding opportunities in all doctoral and master's programs. These awards differ by level and by program. PhD students are typically offered full funding packages (full tuition, living stipend, and graduate assistantship). CCAS offers merit-based partial tuition awards to many of the students admitted to our PsyD and master's programs; some of these programs also offer graduate assistantships as well as small stipend awards.

60 credits, including 45 credits in required courses, 9 credits in elective courses, and 6 credits in thesis, including a thesis exhibition.

A thesis exhibition consisting of the execution of creative work along with a critical statement about this work must be completed under the supervision of a committee consisting of at least two full-time members of the departmental faculty.
Electives
9 credits in studio and seminar electives
Studio and art history electives should be taken at the 6000 level or above. In consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies, MFA students may elect to take up to 6 credits of upper-level and graduate courses in other academic departments, assuming prerequisites have been met. Students may take one 3000-level course in another academic area with approval.
