Key Summary
The mission of the Department of Business and Accounting is to prepare its students with the ethical awareness and professional competencies needed for success in today’s dynamic organizations. This mission directly supports the department's vision of having Guilford's business programs recognized regionally for graduating ethical and highly qualified leaders.
The Business Administration major and minor teach principles rooted in the Core Values of integrity, stewardship, and community. Business Administration majors learn to analyze, plan, organize, communicate, and work with others in preparation for careers in today’s global business environment. They gain valuable hands-on experience during internships at such organizations and companies as the American Red Cross, Procter and Gamble, and Samet Corporation that help them build a strong business portfolio ahead of graduation.
Guilford's Master of Business Administration students gain a comprehensive understanding of basic business principles, including international business, marketing, leadership, finance, economics, strategy, and ethics.
An education in Accounting, the language of all commerce, prepares students for success in almost any area of business. Accounting majors develop sound analytical and communication skills and gain problem-solving experience in real-world situations. Expert faculty work collaboratively with students to prepare them to navigate the ever-changing landscape of theory, regulation, and practice. Graduates of the Accounting program have gone on to careers in public accounting, industrial and governmental accounting, and nonprofit leadership. Others have pursued graduate studies or used their solid financial background as a springboard to careers in banking and business.
Majors and Minors
- Accounting Major: The bachelor of science degree in Accounting gives students exposure to the primary area of Accounting in which they receive a basic grounding in statistics, economics, computers, and finance. Accounting majors may sit for the CPA Examination in the semester in which they graduate.
- Accounting Minor: The Accounting minor provides non-accounting majors with basic concepts and tools that can be applied to enhance the application and marketability of their liberal arts education.
- Business Administration Major: The bachelor of science in Business Administration offers a broad liberal arts education with an intense professional focus. In conjunction with an adviser, a student may choose to emphasize an area of study within the department by choosing a business-related minor.
- Business Minor: The Business minor provides students with basic business concepts and tools that can be applied to enhance the application and marketability of their liberal arts education. Students gain a basic understanding of the world of business, its global aspects, and ethical issues. The minor in Business is not available to business administration majors.
- Entrepreneurship Minor: The minor in Entrepreneurship is designed for students who are interested in entrepreneurship, want to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and/or are interested in solving community problems. The minor will provide students with highly sought-after soft skills such as communication, leadership, creative thinking, adaptability and curiosity while bolstering hard skills like marketing, financial management, business plan development and presenting. Students who complete this minor will have developed a strong foundation in entrepreneurship and organizational management.
- Master's Degree in Business Administration: The Guilford College online MBA prepares graduate students for long-term success. It's designed for recent college graduates, as well as experienced professionals ready to get to the next level in their careers. While classes are live on campus, the program’s HyFlex design — a combination of scheduled, in-person, remote, and recorded activities — also allows for online participation.
- Money and Finance Minor: The Money and Finance minor educates students to analyze an organization’s financial reports and think strategically about its financial position.
