Advanced Diploma in Business Administration–Accounting (with or without work experience)

Required Courses

In order to graduate, you need to complete 34 courses: 29 Mandatory courses, 2 Business Electives, and 3 General Education Electives.

For the Business Administration-Accounting (with work experience) option, you need to complete 35 courses: 30 mandatory courses, 2 Business Electives, and 3 General Education Electives.

Depending on the results of your placement tests, you may be required to take COMM1000 Introduction to College Communication before progressing to COMM 1007. Similarly, you may be required to take MATH1027 (Business Math with Remediation) before progressing to MATH 1191. COMM 1000 and MATH 1027 do not count towards the required courses for graduation, and you will be charged for these extra courses. Please speak to the Business Office if you need any assistance.

General Education Courses (semesters 3, 5, and 6): You must complete 4 General Education courses. One mandatory ("Successful Social Relations" – GHUM 1087) and 3 chosen from at least 2 of the following categories: Social Sciences (GSSC), Arts and Humanities (GHUM), or Science and Technology (GSCI).

You are required to make up any failed or dropped courses before you are eligible to graduate. You can make up these courses during the day, and some are offered in the evening through Continuing Education. Please check with the business office staff to ensure that the continuing education courses are equivalent to what is taught in the full-time program. Please note that some courses may not be offered every semester. Our staff can assist you with any special timetable requirements you may have.

Articulation Agreement

George Brown College has agreements with several universities in Canada, the United States and abroad that may give you credit for your college diploma.

The graduate demonstrates the ability to:

• Record financial transactions in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, private enterprises, publicly accountable enterprises, and non-profit organizations.
• Prepare and present financial statements, reports, and other documents in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and private enterprises.
• Contribute to strategic decision-making by applying advanced management accounting concepts.
• Prepare individuals' and Canadian-controlled private corporations’ income tax returns and individuals’ basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
• Analyze and evaluate organizational structures and the interdependence of functional areas, and contribute to the development of strategies that positively impact financial performance.

Educational Pathways

Opportunities exist for three-year Accounting diploma students to enter the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Services) program through an articulation agreement

Future Study Options

Graduates of the Business Administration-Accounting advanced diploma may be eligible for advanced standing in the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Services) program.

Designations

Graduates of this program may wish to pursue other professional designations or credentials in Accounting.

Graduates of this program may also wish to pursue membership in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

This is an ACCA Accredited Program and provides the following ACCA exemptions:

• F1–F4 (on completion)
• F5 (on the basis of Management Accounting I [ACCT 2011] PLUS Management Accounting II [ACCT 2014])
• F6 (on the basis of Taxation I [ACCT 2028[ PLUS Taxation II [ACCT 3009])

This program will hold accreditation for a period of five years, for graduates from 01/01/2017 to 31/12/2021.
