Key Summary
About: The PhD Biomedical Engineering programme at Gdańsk University of Technology (Politechnika Gdańska) lets you specialize in computer science, electronics, imaging, biophotonics, physics, biomechanics and chemistry. Teaching runs across faculties including Chemistry; Civil and Environmental; Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics; Electrical and Control; and Mechanical and Ship Technology – with visiting professors and access to modern laboratories to support projects.
Career Outcomes: Graduates gain skills in biomedical engineering, imaging, biomaterials and medical devices. They can work in research, academia, hospitals or industry on design, testing and use of devices. Career opportunities include researcher, product developer, clinical engineer, regulatory specialist and R&D engineer.
The proposed training program enables the PhD students to specialize and extend their knowledge in various aspects of biomedical engineering, namely: computer sciences, electronics, imaging techniques, biophotonics, physics, biomechanics and chemistry. The education takes place at several faculties of Gdańsk University of Technology: Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Electronics Telecommunications and Informatics, Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering and also Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. Moreover, some of the lectures are given by visiting professors from related research fields.
This multidisciplinary training programme poses the possibility to develop the individual interests of a PhD student and maximum use of the research infrastructure (modern and well-equipped laboratories) of GUT as well as the intellectual potential of teaching and research staff.
Research areas:
- Biochemistry and molecular biology
- Biomedical imaging and computer vision in medicine
- Biophotonics
- Biotechnology
- Environment and health
- Human-related microorganisms in the environment
- Chemistry in medicine
- Telemedicine, health informatics, and computer-aided diagnosis and therapy
Training at the Doctoral School is free of charge. Everyone accepted to the Doctoral School (except for PhD students holding a doctor's title) receives a doctoral scholarship.
In addition, PhD students of a Doctoral School can apply for:
- Minister's scholarships for outstanding young scientists
- Scholarships from the Own Scholarship Fund
- EIRU scholarships
- Scholarships from research grants (available to the supervisor)
- Scholarships from other institutions (e.g., foundations, more information on the website, in Polish only, we can provide you with an English Google translation)
The graduates will gain extensive knowledge and skills in the field of broadly understood biomedical engineering. They will have qualifications enabling them to work in scientific units or industrial plants dealing with the design, construction and use of modern medical devices, new diagnostic techniques or obtaining new biomaterials and chemicals with a wide range of biological activity, including therapeutic agents.
