Introduction

In the competitive environment in which we are moving, organizations must manage their different activities effectively. For this reason, they demand management models that they can use as tools for this task.

It is a fact that the evolution of the different versions of the quality, environment and occupational risk prevention standards converges towards a single integrated system. The first step was taken by the ISO 19011: 2002 standard on audits, which serves both the quality and the environment field. Subsequently, the appearance of the OHSAS 18001: 2007 standard and, more recently, the ISO 9001: 2008 standard, have confirmed this trend.

A high percentage of companies considering systems integration already have at least one quality management system in place, as it is the most common and widespread. The strategy involves integrating in the existing management manual, particular aspects of the other systems to be integrated, optimizing the resources and the derived costs. In this context, it is essential to ensure that the integrated system adapts to the idiosyncrasies of organizations - for example, in large organizations, appointing a person in charge of the integrated system - and the analysis of the common elements to be integrated to avoid oversizing the system.
