Introduction
The English Language Institute offers a TOEFL® preparation course for those individuals seeking admission to American universities, licenses, certification in professional fields, or proof of proficiency for job placement. This course prepares students for both, iBT (Internet-Based) and ITP – Level 1 (Digital) TOEFL® tests. The course is offered at convenient times each term. Classes are small to ensure personal attention to students’ needs, and instructors are trained test specialists.
Curriculum
Internet-Based (iBT) TOEFL®
This portion of the course prepares students for every skill area of the examination. It begins by reviewing writing structures for both the academic writing and integrated writing portions of the examination. Students are taught exactly what they should expect on these sections so that they can cover all of the important areas in their responses. The reading comprehension portion of the course covers the ten questions that are asked in the section and how students should find the credited response quickly and efficiently. The preparation of the speaking portion of the examination covers the six questions that are asked and how to respond in ways that will help the students achieve the best possible score. In the listening comprehension section, students review the question types and the structure of the section (dialogues, lectures, etc.) so that they are able to maximize scores even when they encounter comprehension difficulties. Students who attend regularly and do all of the assignments should achieve the required scores for undergraduate or graduate programs.
ITP Level 1 (Digital) TOEFL®
This portion of the course is designed for advanced students seeking admission to college/university who need a TOEFL®score of 550 for undergraduate studies and for graduate programs. It is a rigorous course focusing on the three (3) skill areas tested: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. There is no speaking or essay-writing on the ITP – Level 1 (Digital) TOEFL® test, and the entire test is in multiple-choice format, so this portion of the course concentrates on the recognition skills and speed needed for this kind of exam. In the 30-hour, 10-week course, we will cover various topics in grammar, such as subject-verb Agreement, Verbs & Time Words, Word Order, Word Forms, Clauses, Participles, Article Usage, Gerunds & Infinitives, and Commonly Confused Words. In listening, we will review Idiomatic Expressions, Phrasal Verbs, Pronunciation Distinctions, and comprehending formal and informal English. Reading covers Main Idea, Vocabulary in Context, Fact vs. Inference, and Negative Questions. Lots of homework and timed practice tests will help you in all areas. Most students improve their initial scores by 50-60 points in 10 weeks, but this is entirely individual—you can do much more if you’re willing to work really hard!
