The Academic Graduate Studies in Administration Program at FGV EBAPE consists of the MSc and Ph.D. in Administration. Closely connected, these courses share the same values and principles.

The main purpose of the MSc program is to prepare students for PhDs (at FGV EBAPE or some other distinguished institution in Brazil or elsewhere in the world) or for the job market.

The main purpose of the Ph.D. program is to prepare students for academic careers as research professors at universities or other academic institutions in Brazil or abroad.

The MSc & the Ph.D. programs offer methodological and conceptual training equivalent to those provided by their international peers, as well as knowledge and access tailored to the many different contexts of the reality in Brazil. Strong emphasis is given to the generation and dissemination of high-quality research through published papers in leading journals in the field of administration and related areas.

Profile, Duration, and Commitment

The program is proud of adopting an interdisciplinary approach, welcoming students with undergraduate or Master’s Degrees in Administration or related areas such as economics, engineering, computer science, psychology, neuroscience, political science, sociology, accounting, statistics, and applied mathematics, among others. The Academic MSc program is 21 months long and the Ph.D. program is 48 months long.

Both programs are full-time (Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional classes on Saturday, from 9 am to 12 pm, if necessary). Students are expected to spend time at the school every day throughout the duration of the program, participating in classroom activities, research projects, seminars, and discussions, which shape and strengthen the academic culture of the program. The MSc and Ph.D. Students have an exclusive work environment.

All students are granted a tuition fee waiver. However, students with a full-time commitment to the program, with no employment, will be granted a Scholarship. Students’ academic performance and compliance with the rules and deadlines, as determined by the Program regulations, are fundamental for students to remain in the Program. These aspects will also be taken into account for scholarship renewal.

Language

The MSc and Ph.D. programs are taught in English. Consequently, students must be able to read, write, understand and speak English. The MSc dissertation must also be written in English, as well as the conceptual paper, the Ph.D. dissertation proposal, and the final document unless otherwise agreed upon between advisors and students.

Research Tracks, Coursework, and Workshops

MSc Program

Classes begin in the first semester, and the course lasts no more than 21 months, divided into four quarters during which students must obtain 26 credits (the equivalent to 12 30-hour courses/ 2 credits each plus Graduate Seminars I, II, III, and IV). Subsequently, students must obtain 2 credits by completing the Supervised Research Seminars, their thesis project must be approved (until the end of the 5th quarter) and the Master’s thesis defended (until the end of the 7th quarter). In addition to these courses, students are expected to engage in research projects with professors at the School.

The MSc students must attend the following courses in order to complete the program:

Methods Courses

Statistics IA;
Statistics IB; and
Qualitative Data Collection & Analysis or Comparative-Historical Methods.

Research Track Courses

4 courses of the student’s chosen Research Track (to be chosen by the student).

Elective Courses

5 elective courses (related to any research track offered by the program)

Graduate Seminar

I, II, III, and IV (equivalent to one 30-hour course / 2 credits).

Supervised Research Seminar

Ph.D. Program

Classes begin in the first semester, and the course lasts no more than 48 months. During the first eight quarters, students must obtain 30 credits (the equivalent of 15 30-hour courses / 2 credits). Besides, students must obtain 2 credits by attending the Graduate Seminars I, II, III, and IV from the 1st to the 4th quarters, and 4 credits by completing the Supervised Research Seminars between the 5th and 8th quarters. Subsequently, students must submit a conceptual paper, which must be approved (until the end of the 8th quarter); submit and present the dissertation proposal (12th quarter) and finally present and defend the doctoral dissertation (until the end of the 16th quarter). Additionally, students must engage in research projects with professors at the School in order to strengthen their skills and enhance their academic records.

Research Tracks

The MSc and Ph.D. include four research tracks, namely:

Behavioral & Decision Sciences: Focus on individual decision-making processes.
Strategy, Management & Organizations: Focus on processes at the organizational level.
Finance: Focus on business economics, asset pricing, corporate finance, banking, and financial decision-making.
Institutions, Policy, and Government: Focus on the institutional level and policy-making processes.

Each student must follow one of the tracks and may select as electives the mandatory courses from other tracks, as well as the list of elective courses available. The conceptual knowledge obtained in each of the tracks may be used in the Public and Business Administration fields. Similarly, qualitative and quantitative methods can be applied.

Graduate Seminars

All MSc and first-year Ph.D. students must sign up for Graduate Seminars I, II, III & IV. During these seminars, researchers are invited to present and discuss their recent research projects. The Graduate Seminars are held throughout the academic year, depending on the availability of guest researchers.

Workshops

As well as elective courses, the program offers workshops – intensive fifteen-hour courses taught by well-known professors from Brazilian and international institutions.

Supervised Research Seminar

Sessions in which students and their academic advisor discuss the development of the research project and other subjects related to student's academic activities.
