Key Summary
Introduction
The Carpentry and Renovation Technician two-year college diploma program combines in-class learning with two cooperative education work terms. Students will learn the skills to handle tools, read blueprints, material methods, and construction practices. Graduates will also gain advanced skills in leadership and management through the study and application of quantity surveying, estimating, small business operation, scheduling, and property development.

Fanshawe's Carpentry and Renovation Technician program will provide you with the knowledge and hands-on experience you need to achieve your goals.
In your first year of study, you will develop a foundation of knowledge and hands-on skills concerning tools, blueprint reading, layout, materials, methods, and construction practices for residential construction projects. In the second year of our carpentry school, you will take your technical knowledge and skills to the next level with the study of advanced tool use, exterior and interior finishing, as well as an introduction to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. You will also build your leadership and management skills through the study and application of quantity surveying, estimating, small business operation, scheduling, and property development.

The program prepares students for a career in the residential construction industry. Courses are designed to provide the technical knowledge required to perform the construction, estimating, and scheduling associated with the building of one and two-story houses, duplexes, and townhouses. A portion of the program is devoted to the acquisition of hands-on skills in the construction field.

Program Outcome

- Incorporate sustainability practices in the implementation of building construction, renovation, and conservation projects by sustainable building guidelines.
- Communicate and collaborate with diverse clients, supervisors, coworkers, and tradespersons to complete projects on time and maintain effective working relationships.
- Interpret project plans and produce technical sketches and documents to support building construction and renovation projects.
- Select and use technologies to obtain, organize and communicate building construction and renovation information.
- Solve problems related to the implementation of building construction and renovation projects by applying the principles of basic technical mathematics, building design, and building science.
- Select, maintain, and safely use hand tools, and portable and stationary power tools, when performing layout, cutting fitting, and assembly operations.
- Complete building and renovation stages, from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes, by blueprint specifications and conservation principles.
- Select a range of materials and equipment for their appropriate application to building construction and renovation projects.
- Schedule and assist in monitoring the progression of building construction and renovation projects by applying basic principles and strategies of project management.
- Apply basic business principles and strategies to the operation of building construction and/or renovation enterprises.

Here are some examples of career opportunities for graduates of Fanshawe’s Carpentry and Renovation Technician program:
Carpentry Apprentice
Assist a journeyman carpenter with remodelling and construction projects.
General Labourer
Be responsible for performing various tasks to assist operations at construction sites.
Carpenter's Assistant
Be responsible for gathering and carrying materials, positioning equipment, measuring and cutting materials, cleaning equipment and assisting co-workers with daily given tasks.
Co-op Opportunities
Graduates of this program will find opportunities within the residential and light commercial industries with general contractors, builders, developers, and building material suppliers. Graduates may fill various roles including carpenter's assistant, crew leader, site supervisor or technical representative. Graduates may also consider pursuing a General Carpentry Apprenticeship or starting their own construction company.
This two-year program has two Co-operative Education work terms. Students can choose to participate in a four-month paid co-op term from May to August between years one and two of academic study. The second four-month work term will take place from May to August following the completion of the second year of academic study.
Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma.
