Introduction
Financial Technology (FinTech), an emerging industry that enhances convenience and efficiency in financial activities through the adoption of data-oriented and smart technologies, is bringing revolution to the financial service sector.
The development of innovations such as virtual banking and blockchain technology opens up a new era of financial digitization which drives up the demand for FinTech talents in Hong Kong. Backed by the Faculty of Engineering experts, this programme aims to nurture the next generation of FinTech professionals who are technologically adept and business savvy and can offer innovative solutions to finance-related industries and thus, secure and strengthen our lead in financial services in Asia and the world.
The MSc programme emphasizes practical skills and industrial training. Students can enrich their experience by working on real-life projects under the co-supervision of academic staff and industrial supervisors or being interns in financial institutions or FinTech companies referred to or approved by the programme.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates should have acquired advanced knowledge and practical skills in financial technologies. They will be well suited for jobs demanding strong technical skills in finance-related industries including banking, insurance, asset management, internet finance, FinTech start-ups and government regulatory agencies.
Programme Features
Career-Oriented Curriculum
Provides flexibility on course selection for fulfilment of coursework requirements:
- Course Track: 8 Courses
- Practicum Track: 7 Courses + Internship
- Project Track: 6 Courses + a 2-Semester Industrial Project
Internship
Provided to those who are interested in acquiring practical skills and knowledge by attaching to a Company for at least 12 weeks. Examples include Jd Finance, We Bank, Haitong, Hsbc, Etc. The internship also includes regulatory briefings provided by The Hong Kong Monetary Authority, The Securities & Futures Commission, and The Insurance Authority.
Industrial Projects
It is a 6-unit 2-semester project course under the co-supervision of an industry practitioner and a faculty member in the faculty. Each student will engage in a fascinating research problem. The research findings may be sisseminated at international conferences or journal publications.
Mentorship Programme
Enhances students’ practical knowledge and communication skills through frequent interactions with experienced industrial practitioners. The programme not only strengthens students’ abilities but also inspires their insight into future career development.
Entrepreneurship and Pitching
Students can opt for the entrepreneurship course. The course is designed to turn innovative and creative students Into entrepreneurs through multi-disciplinary, hands-on and project-based learning. Students are expected to conduct case studies, participate in a field to visit fintech organizations and high-tech companies for a close-up on the operation of these organizations, and even pitch their ideas to companies.
Wide Range of Electives
Courses are categorised into “Technology-Oriented Electives”, “Business/ Application-Oriented Electives” and Enrichment Training.

Curriculum
Three tracks are available for students to choose from depending on their interests and career aspirations:
- Course Track: 3 required courses + 5 elective courses*
- Practicum Track: 3 required courses + 4 elective courses* + 3 units of internship
- Industrial Project Track: 3 required courses + 3 elective courses* + 6 units of a 2-semester industrial project
* Elective Courses in "Technology-Oriented Electives" and "Business / Application-Oriented Electives" only.
