Objectives
The Master in Industrial Engineering and Management aims to combine basic training in engineering with advanced training in the areas of Industrial Management.
Students can undertake academic mobility experiences during the Master’s course under the Erasmus+ program or other exchange programs with Universities in the USA, China, and South America.
The course ends with an individual dissertation project, lasting one semester, which is normally carried out in a business environment (nationally or internationally). It is also possible to carry out a dissertation integrated into scientific research projects (in FEUP in its interface institutes, or in Universities outside Portugal).
The development of creativity, communication skills, team leadership, entrepreneurship, innovative spirit, and resilience are also central aspects of the training acquired in the Master in Industrial Engineering and Management.

It is intended that graduates acquire scientific and technological training that will enable them in the future to have the versatility to adapt quickly to changes in society and to respond to the challenges of organizations, effectively learning new methods and skills, with a view to continuously improving the organizations where they work, ensuring the sustainable development of the environment, in social and environmental terms.
Specific learning objectives that students are encouraged to develop include:
- To acquire a comprehensive knowledge in the area of quantitative methods (Operations Research, Statistics, Data Science) and Information Systems, especially seen as decision support tools.
- To Acquire an integrated knowledge of business management, with emphasis on the areas of Operations Management (Quality, Maintenance, Production, Logistics, Digitalization of Industry) and Business Management (Strategy, Marketing, Financial Management, Management Control, Talent Management, Business Law, Innovation and Entrepreneurship).
- Develop personal attitudes conducive to a successful professional activity and a relevant intervention in society, including an attitude of change agent, creativity, effective communication skills, group work, valuing continuous training, leadership skills of multidisciplinary teams, ability to assess situations, discuss ideas, listen to others and make decisions.
- Develop an attitude of responsible citizenship, with social and environmental concerns in line with sustainable development.
Graduates are expected to be able to support decision-making in organizations, being active agents of change and innovation.
Graduates are expected to perform management support roles in the preparation of decisions in various functional areas of companies, including production management, logistics, asset and maintenance management, quality management, information systems, process modeling, financial analysis, management control, strategy or marketing. Those who demonstrate leadership skills can attain positions in business administration or start their own businesses.
For those who wish to pursue an academic career or obtain a PhD qualification, they can continue their education in the FEUP’s PhD Program in Industrial Engineering and Management, or in other national or international higher education institutions.
