Introduction
Empowering future leaders to solve transnational problems.
We will support you in acquiring the tools, the knowledge, and the network, to design new responses to the unprecedented challenges our society will face during the next decade and beyond.
The Master in Transnational Governance (MTnG) is a two-year program offered by the EUI School of Transnational Governance (STG). The curriculum empowers students to go beyond traditional perspectives and to design and implement innovative, effective, and sustainable public policy solutions for a globalized world.
This residential program is taught at the STG’s headquarters in the heart of Florence. Students can also participate in outstanding academic activities offered by other European University Institute departments. In a truly international environment and embedded within a network of partner institutions, the program includes a compulsory curricular internship and a wealth of opportunities to spend a semester studying abroad.
Combining interdisciplinary perspectives with hands-on training
Designed to examine the most pressing policy issues of our time through an interdisciplinary lens, the MTnG brings together political science, international relations, public policy, economics, and law. You will consider governance beyond nation-states and will be equipped not only with the knowledge of policy tools suitable for solving transnational problems but also with how best to combine and orchestrate these tools to design effective, outcome-driven policy solutions.
As a Masters' student at the School of Transnational Governance, you will:
- examine the most pressing policy issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.
- be part of a diverse class with students from all over the world.
- learn through a diverse set of applied learning methodologies.
- be taught by an outstanding international faculty of academic scholars and public policy practitioners.
- learn to think ‘outside the box’.
- benefit from the resources and network of the European University Institute.

Structure of the course
Induction
The Induction is a two-week introduction period that kicks off the academic year. It takes place during the first weeks of September and provides an environment in which students get to know the School’s different programs. During the Induction, you will begin your exploration of transnational governance whilst also learning more about the School and the Institute’s activities. You will also take your first steps in an energetic and mutually supportive community, getting to know your peers, Faculty and Staff across a range of activities.
First year
The degree’s first year lays the foundation for understanding and analyzing governance in a transnational context. Through the study of transnational law, economics, politics, and international institutions - among others – you will gain an interdisciplinary perspective. You will also acquire the necessary analytical and technical expertise to succeed in your career by learning about emergent actors and practices of transnational governance while studying the drivers of contemporary shifts in global interdependence and their implications for democratic systems.
Curricular internship
Between the first and the second year, you will participate in a curricular internship in one of our international hosting organizations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, the European Parliament, and many others. These hands-on experiences are a crucial opportunity to gain more specific knowledge and expertise while expanding your professional network and exploring options for your life after study.
Second year
During the second year, you can specialize in the area of transnational governance. You will participate in lectures facilitated by global leaders, to advance your expertise and professional development. To complete the program, you will develop a final Masters’ project, applying your research skills and analytical knowledge.
Professional development and practical skills
We place importance on the development of practical skills during your time of the study. Throughout the two-year program, you will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of different workshops to further develop your skills in areas such as project management, public speaking, diplomatic communications, negotiation techniques, and much more. Participation in these workshops prepares you for leadership and management positions in a globalized world.
Student Mobility Programme
You will have the opportunity to spend your third semester abroad at one of our partner universities by participating in the Student Mobility Programme. This is a great chance for you to gain more international experience and expand your network.
