Introduction

EUCLID, an international intergovernmental organization with a university mandate, offers to select students from the general public an external (distance or online) degree program called the DILT or EUCLID Doctorate in International Law and Treaty Law (which is a full Ph.D.). As a public non-profit institution, EUCLID is able to offer affordable, low-tuition programs.

This online LLM in international law, representing 90 US credits beyond the Bachelor's, is the world's only Ph.D. programs in this field, offered by an intergovernmental organization itself constituted under international law (the European University Institute offers a Ph.D. in Law more generally).

Partial scholarships are available ECOWAS residents and the permanent staff of intergovernmental organizations.

ACADEMIC PRESENTATION:

This doctoral program degree focuses on the actual practice of States and intergovernmental organizations, rather than the advancement of academic knowledge for its own sake. This program was designed to be used by professional diplomats working for the EUCLID Participating States and can be considered an excellent route to pursue a career within governmental bodies, international law firms, NGOs and international organizations. It is also very well suited for lawyers (attorneys, barristers) desiring to acquire a higher level of international legal expertise with an LLM credential. In terms of academic progression, EUCLID's intention is to offer a credible path leading from the LLM (24 credits) to the MSc (additional 12 credits) and finally to the Ph.D. (another 25 credits of coursework or directed studies, followed by the dissertation). Within certain parameters, the program is customizable, with elective courses focusing on:

  • International organizations
  • International Business Law
  • European Law
  • Maritime law
  • Treaty drafting, negotiation, and application.

ENROLLMENT SCHEDULE:

EUCLID has ongoing enrollment (intake) for this program. It is acceptable to apply several months in advance but it is recommended to apply 60-40 days in advance. General public slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
