Erasmus School of Philosophy is a leading research and teaching institution in the Netherlands. ESPhil enables students to become critical thinkers and engaged scholars by developing their academic skills and encouraging them to practice philosophy in multiple societal settings.

Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) of Erasmus University Rotterdam is a leading research and teaching institution in the Netherlands. The faculty has a broad international orientation, with many international students and staff members and strong connections with universities abroad. Our research programs are internationally leading in our field.

Students are very satisfied with the programs offered by ESPhil. We have two Bachelor programmes: the Dutch BA Philosophy and the international Bachelor in Philosophy of a Specific Discipline. In the Master you can choose the regular Master's Philosophy Now (1 year) or the Research Master's Philosophy & Economics (2 years).

Guided by dedicated lecturers, students delve into various philosophical topics, ranging from the philosophy of the early Enlightenment up to post-modern continental philosophy; from ethics to philosophy of science and metaphysics. Our curriculum is emphatically involved with the current philosophical and societal debates, and our research addresses collaborative themes: The making of Modernity; Human conditions; Philosophy of economics; The structure of science and reality.

Erasmus University Rotterdam has campuses at four locations, three of which are in Rotterdam and one in The Hague. On these campuses we study, work, practice sports, relax, eat and drink. On campus Woudestein, there are also several buildings where students live. The Real Estate & Facilities team works hard every day to create the most hospitable, sustainable and accessible campus that is clean, safe and secure.

    To be accepted as a visiting exchange student, you need to be nominated by your home university. The exchange office at your university can provide you with detailed information about the internal application procedure. Additionally, you need to have an adequate background in philosophy.

    Please note that we do not accept free movers at Erasmus School of Philosophy.

    The Necessary Documents

    When applying to our exchange programme, please make sure you have the following necessary documents ready in time:

    • An academic transcript.
    • Your nomination letter
    • Proof of your English proficiency level according to these standards.

    English Language Requirements

    The English language requirements for an incoming exchange student at ESPhil are a minimum of CEFR B2 in the following test score ranges:

    • Cambridge English grades and scales: Grade B (scale minimum 173)
    • IELTS (Academic) overall band score: 6.0 (min. 6 sub score)
    • TOEFL iBT (Traditional & Paper Edition): 80 (min. 20 sub score)
    • Waiver for native speakers

    In principle, your nationality determines the immigration arrangements you need to take before coming to study at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Remember: you cannot arrange your immigration process on your own. Team Immigration (International Office, Erasmus University Rotterdam) will apply for your residence permit. They will start your immigration procedure once they have been informed by your faculty.

    Scholarships & grants are often called ‘gift aid’ because they are financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. Grants are usually awarded based on the student’s financial need, and scholarships are usually awarded to students who excel in a particular field.
