Key Summary
The study program in a nutshell
This joint program covers one academic year and is subdivided into three terms. You will study at renowned universities in an international and stimulating setting. The program is focused on the economic analysis of law in general, followed by specialized courses in three different tracks you can opt for. These are the Public & International track, the Markets, Corporations & Regulators track and the Innovation & Intellectual Property track. You will finish the academic year by writing a thesis.
The EMLE programme allows students the unique chance to study at least at two different European universities, with the option of attending even a third European or a non-European university. This creates an international framework through the universities, scholars and lecturers, and of course, the students themselves. Within one academic year, students come from more than 30 different countries, which creates a global working atmosphere while providing constant opportunities to improve social skills and cultural competencies.
What does this study entail?
This joint program covers one academic year and is subdivided into three terms. It offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary studies of law and economics at multiple renowned European and non-European universities. Each graduate gets awarded a joint LL.M. degree. Additionally, partner universities not part of the joint degree will award a national LL.M. or an equivalent degree, e.g. MA, MSc. to students attending an EMLE term there. To make law students familiar with basic economic reasoning, some courses are more economic in orientation. Other courses deal with comparative law to internationalise the legal background of the students.
Is this the right programme for you?
The EMLE is a postgraduate program, so students are selected if they have at least 240 ECTS (four years) of prior education before July of the same year the programme starts. Preference will be given to applicants who already have obtained a Master’s degree. Besides graduates in law or economics, students with a first degree in business administration or in other social sciences may also apply. This is under the condition that the completed study programme includes a substantial number of courses in law and/or economics, and/or the student convincingly shows their motivation to study the economic analysis of law. Besides that, this programme is taught in English, so students should be able to provide a proof of English proficiency.

This program provides you with
- A solid economic analysis of the most important branches of private, public, international, and European law;
- Advanced knowledge in economic analysis of law: the use of economic methods to explain and assess the effects of divergent legal rules;
- An interdisciplinary and multicultural approach and a chance to study in three different countries in one year.
When: first term (October-December)
Where: Haifa, Hamburg, Rotterdam
In this term, you will earn 20 EC. You must attend five fundamental courses.
When: second term (January-March)
Where: Ghent, Hamburg, Rotterdam
In this term, you will earn 20 EC. You will attend three fundamental courses at the second term university. In addition, you will attend two additional specialised courses defined by your choice of a certain track, taught at the respective second term location:
- the Innovation & IP Track (Ghent);
- the Economic Analysis of Public & International Law Track (Hamburg); or
- the Markets, Corporations & Regulators Track (Rotterdam).
When: third term (April-June)
Where: Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, Hamburg, Mumbai, Rome, Warsaw
In this term, you will earn 20 EC divided as follows:
- 5 EC are earned by attending two complementary courses, following the track system you chose with your second term location;
- 15 EC are earned by writing your Master’s thesis in the form of a scientific paper of not more than 13,000 words on a specific subject in economic analysis of law. You are supposed to specialise in one area of law and economics, which depends on the third term location and track chosen.
The EMLE programme is designed to produce future lawyers and economists capable of success in an international framework.
For law students, knowledge of the specific regulations of their home country is too narrow a base for counselling firms that are active in international trade. Additionally, knowledge of the economic effects of legal rules has become indispensable for understanding their clients’ commercial needs.
Similarly, economics students will profit from an accurate understanding of the institutional legal framework of market economies. For both lawyers and economists, knowledge of the other discipline and international contacts are crucial for a successful career.
The EMLE programme is the institutional response to these challenges.
