Step into the world of MA Animation at the Estonian Academy of Arts, the best way to become part of the EKA animation community. Estonia is celebrated worldwide for its distinctive animation, known for its poetic language, bold storytelling and deeply original approach. Our programme continues this tradition while exploring animation as a unique fine art medium.

We see animation as a powerful tool for artistic expression, a language through which identity, ideas and stories come to life. At MA Animation, you will develop your author’s voice, shaping meaningful works that resonate with contemporary culture and society.

Our approach is grounded in collaboration, dialogue and co-design. You will learn through real projects, teamwork and exchange, creating your own path as an animation author while also guiding and supporting others. The curriculum integrates theory and skills, empowering you to understand, practise and apply your knowledge in creative and strategic ways.

Through hands-on experience, you will tackle complex challenges, explore different methods and develop your ability to think critically and solve problems. Working in an open and international environment, you will build a strong portfolio and a deep understanding of the field’s future directions. As part of the programme, you will also take part in international animation festivals, gain valuable insights through Erasmus workshops, and connect with the global animation community.

Are you ready to transform your ideas into animated worlds? MA Animation nurtures creativity, fosters collaboration and equips you with the tools to become an independent filmmaker, director or artist, shaping the future of a medium that inspires audiences across the globe.

The MA animation programme focuses on helping students realise themselves as animated film authors. As our master students come from very different parts of the world and have different educational backgrounds, we try to encourage their individual approach to filmmaking. The films vary from narrative to more experimental. Upon completion of the MA in Animation programme, students have acquired in-depth theoretical and practical animation knowledge and skills. After graduation, our students are qualified to realise themselves as animated film creators, professionals in creative industries or teachers in their field. Students who have completed the master’s programme are also qualified to continue their studies and pursue a doctoral degree.

Every student makes 2 artistic projects in 2 years, one of which is their animated graduate film, the other may be an artistic project of any artistic practice (exhibition, interactive art piece, app, etc), so long as it is related to animation. For their graduate film, they are free to choose the techniques and materials of their choice, and are expected to be the scriptwriter, director, artist, and animator of the film. It is allowed to have technical help.
