    Our City

Bratislava is the capital city of the Slovak Republic. It is situated on both banks of the river Danube, on the foothills of the Small Carpathians, in the geographic heart of Europe.

Bratislava has really a unique location, it is the only capital city that lies on the border of 3 countries: Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary.

Bratislava is not only a capital city but also the biggest city in Slovakia with almost 500,000 inhabitants. The city is the seat of the president, parliament, and government and also the social, political, cultural, and economic center of the country. Administratively, Bratislava is divided into 5 districts, which in total are divided into 17 subdistricts. Bratislava is in the world also known as Beauty on the Danube, City of Fountains, or City of Peace (the title was awarded to the city by the World Peace Council).

Although Bratislava ranks among the youngest capitals in Europe, its history is very rich. The city was situated at the crossroads of important trade and military routes. The first vestiges of the territory's settlement are connected with the Younger Stone Age. The Slavic tribes of today's Slovak population came to the territory of today's city sometime in the 5th-6th centuries.

During the 7th century, Bratislava was part of a Samo's empire, in the 9th century Bratislava became a significant city of the Great Moravian Princedom. The city received all the privileges of a free town in 1291. From the 10th century to 1918 Bratislava was a part of Hungary. After the Turkish occupation, Bratislava became the coronation town, 11 Hungarian kings and 8 queens were coronated in St. Martin's Cathedral.

The first coronation was in 1563 (King Maximilián II), the last in 1830 (King Ferdinand V). Probably the most famous queen coronated at the Martin's Cathedral was Maria Theresa in 1741. From 1918 Bratislava was a part of Czechoslovakia and from 1st January 1993, Bratislava is the capital city of the Slovak Republic.

The most famous historical monuments in Bratislava are for sure the Bratislava Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral, Michael´s Tower with Michael's Gate, the Old Town Hall, The Primatial Palace with a beautiful Mirror Hall (the seat of the Mayor of Bratislava), The Grassalkovich Palace (the seat of the President of Slovakia), The Slovak National Theatre (old building), The National Gallery, Reduta etc. Nowadays, Bratislava is also a cosmopolitan city. You can find here many opportunities for pleasant spending of your free time, as well as for entertainment, cultural and sports events, music or film festivals, shopping or food gastronomy (many restaurants and cafes, discos and various night clubs, cinemas, theatres, museums, exhibition halls, big shopping centers, etc.)
