Introduction
Learn key principles of storytelling and how to apply them to design problems and solutions.
Workshop Dates: July 13โ17, 2020 (2 pmโ10 pm CEST)
Faculty: James Zhou & Ben Healy
What is this workshop?
Storytelling is an extremely important skill for designers and researchers to master. This workshop will teach key storytelling strategies and techniques used in a variety of media, including fiction, non-fiction, film, art, and design; and show how to apply them to interaction design through a series of discussions and exercises. We will take a rapid prototyping approach, and explore the ways designers can benefit from strong storytelling skills at every stage of the design process.
What will you learn?
Participants will learn how to approach design problems through a narrative lens, and how to use storytelling as a tool in research, brainstorming, and prototyping. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to take inspiration from a range of sources and create clear and compelling stories to apply to their design.
How will you learn it?
- Very short daily exercises will help you become more comfortable with storytelling
- An overview of narrative structure will help you identify compelling stories in the world as well as create your own
- Group and individual storytelling exercises will help you find your own voice and learn how to hold your audienceโs attention
- Experimentation with a variety of storytelling mediums and formats
Please note: This workshop is currently undergoing changes in order to be held via remote learning. Please check back soon for a more up-to-date description of the workshopโs activities.
