Concordia University of Edmonton’s Bachelor of Education (After Degree) is an innovative and targeted program designed to prepare you for a challenging and rewarding career as a teacher in Alberta’s elementary schools.
The Bachelor of Education (After Degree) is a two-year elementary generalist program recognized by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and fulfills the requirements for certification as a teacher in Alberta. All courses in the BEd (AD) program include an assessment of professional pre-service attributes.

Disclaimer: International Students
Please note that this program has a mandatory internship and field placement, which requires international students to have a co-op work permit. We recommend that international students apply for their co-op work permit at least 6 months prior to their internship or field placement start date. Please note, students will not be able to complete the internship, field placement without a co-op work permit. This may result in a delay in program completion.
Note: the co-op work permit is a separate work authorization from the one which may appear in the study permit. Students cannot use their study permit work authorization in order to complete their co-op or internship course.
Year One: Semester One – Foundation
Students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attributes that the profession has identified as being the foundation of successful teaching.
- Introduction to Planning in the Elementary School
- The Organizational Framework of Teaching
- Theoretical Foundations of Teaching and Schooling
- Learning, Instructional Psychology and Educational Practice
- Field Experience I (no credit – an ongoing field experience during Year One)
In addition to the above, students must present:

Year One: Semester Two – Instruction I
Students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attributes in instruction that the profession has identified as effective in the elementary school classroom.

Year Two: Semester One – Instruction II
Students apply the knowledge, skills, and attributes acquired regarding instruction, with accountability, in an actual classroom.

Year Two: Semester Two – Integration
Students demonstrate, through their synthesis of ideas and experiences, the creativity, ingenuity, and insight needed to solve contemporary educational problems. Each student will be expected to design a lifelong approach to professional development.
