Key Summary
About: Computational Biology at Colby College sits within the Biology Department; Colby was founded in 1813 and is the 12th oldest liberal arts college in the US. Students study plants, animals and microorganisms from molecular to ecosystem scales, learn scientific inquiry, experimental design and hypothesis testing, and conduct facultyโmentored, selfโdesigned research in a cell culture laboratory, microscopy suite and DNA sequencing facility. The major is flexible and offers concentrations in cell and molecular biology/biochemistry, neuroscience, ecology and evolution.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can pursue career opportunities in bioinformatics, computational biology, lab research, biotech, conservation or graduate study; skills include data analysis.
Students in the Biology Department gain exposure to the breadth of biological sciences and become skilled in the methods of scientific inquiry. The curriculum emphasizes the study of plants, animals, and microorganisms from the molecular to the ecosystem level. Research is integral to our teaching and learning. Biology majors work closely with professors to generate hypotheses and conduct self-designed experiments in teaching and research facilities that include a cell culture laboratory, an advanced microscopy suite, and a DNA sequencing facility.
The major is flexible, allowing students to develop a course of study matching their particular interests. We offer concentrations in cell and molecular biology/biochemistry, neuroscience, and ecology and evolution.
