Subsea engineering is designed to provide the scientific and technical skills that are necessary for designing, building, installing and operating subsea (beneath the ocean's surface) equipment. This multidisciplinary field is broadly responsible for the control and direct flow of oil and gas from deep marine wells. Degree Plan
The student’s advisory committee, in consultation with the student, will develop the proposed degree plan. The degree plan must be completed and filed with the Graduate and Professional School prior to the deadline imposed by the student’s college, and no later than 90 days prior to the date of the final oral examination. No exceptions are allowed.
Additional coursework may be added to the approved degree plan by petition if it is deemed necessary by the advisory committee to correct deficiencies in the student’s academic preparation. No changes can be made to the degree plan once the student’s Request for Final Examination or Request for Exemption from Final Examination is approved by the Graduate and Professional School.

Program Outcome
In addition to broadening their engineering skills, students will learn about the economic and operational drivers that are critical to designing, selecting, and configuring subsea systems. Students will also learn subsea project management and execution, including experience-based lessons.
All students in this program are exposed to courses that cover the fundamentals of subsea engineering and may select from courses that cover subsea hardware, subsea controls and umbilical systems, subsea riser systems, flowlines, pipelines, and their installation.
The guiding premise of this degree program is to provide practical knowledge of the subsea engineering discipline from actual experiences. The courses are taught by instructors who built their qualifications through industry experience gained from working careers in the oil and gas industry. These professors of practice had successful careers of their own before becoming instructors.
