Key Summary
This course offers a practical application of the methods and concepts that archaeologists use to examine the human past. Students will participate in a research-oriented archaeological field project and will develop skills in both archaeological site survey and excavation.
These include an ability to recognize and record a variety of archaeological site types, basic techniques of site mapping using chain and compass as well as major survey instruments, techniques of excavation and record-keeping in the field, photography, and the initial processing of field data in a lab setting.
Through lectures and discussions, students will also learn about the overall goals of the research project, the intended methods of analysis, and the ethics of modern archaeology.
